Marvel Studios Plans ‘The Eternals’ for a Cinema-Only Release
Variety is reporting that Disney confirmed on Friday that upcoming 2021 films Eternals, The Last Duel, West Side Story, Ron’s Gone Wrong, and The King’s Man will all get an exclusive 45-day theatrical window before moving to digital platforms. The only variation to this plan is the musical Enchanto, which will be in theaters for only 30 days before going to Disney+.
This should make Marvel Studio chief Kevin Feige happy, as he had been an advocate of Marvel films getting an exclusive run in theaters. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed $105.9 million through Wednesday as Marvel’s first theatrical only release in two years. This is less than a normal MCU film, but it’s pacing ahead of Black Widow, the only other MCU film to come out during the pandemic, but the Scarlett Johansson film got a day-and-date release on Disney+ that is believed to have drastically hurt the films box office numbers. It’s also no coincidence that this announcement comes after the success of Shang-Chi as prior to the films release, Disney had avoided making the theater exclusive commitment and there was speculation that some of these films, including Eternal, would be delayed.
This confirmation answers those questions.
