With a little over two months until it hits the big screen on September 3, Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released its second trailer last night – and this one looks even more action-packed and epic than the first glimpse we had of the flick back in April.
The second Shang-Chi trailer debuted last evening on ESPN’s NBA Countdown, which Marvel Studios’ social media had announced earlier in the day.

In the first trailer, we were given a glimpse of Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, who is trying to live a life away from the shadow of his father’s (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) criminal empire (we’ve all been there) only for it to try and drag him back. In the second trailer, we delve into his training, his relationship with his mentor, Jiang Nan (Michelle Yeoh), more action, and the world-building mythology.
“Shang-Chi’s main problem in his life is rooted in not knowing who he really is,” says director and co-writer Destin Daniel Cretton. “He has to learn how to own every part of himself. If he doesn’t allow himself to look at all of it — the good, the bad, the light, and the dark — and to own it all, he won’t be able to reach his full potential.”
We are also given a lot of cool hints and nods to Marvel comics and movies: Keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of the Abomination and….is that Fin Fang Foom?! Plus: we finally get to see these ‘Ten Rings’ – and they are not what we were expecting (and we mean in a WHOAAAA way).
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings features an all-star cast of Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Ronny Chieng, and Florian Munteanu. It is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and written by Cretton, Dave Callaham, and Andrew Lanham, and based on the Marvel character created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin in 1973.
The movie will sit in a rather densely packed second half of 2021 as Marvel Studios’ Phase Four reemerges from COVID stasis. Starting with July 9’s release of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will follow on September 9, with Eternals November 5 and Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17.
