For the second year in a row, Marvel Studios and DC Films are skipping out on presentations for the online San Diego Comic-Con@Home.
SDCC is one of the world’s most popular pop culture conventions and is set to return on July 23 to host another two-day virtual version of its San Diego in-person event. In an effort to keep its attendees as safe as possible amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it plans to once again offer up a whole bunch of panels – presumably with a whole bunch of famous faces – for fans to tune into from the comfort of their own sofa.
Neither Marvel Studios nor Warner Bros.’ DC Films took part in 2020, opting instead to use their own platforms – Disney Investor Day and DC FanDome, respectively – to get comic book movie lovers amped up for their future projects. So it’s hardly a surprise that they’re doing the same again this time around. When it comes to TV though, DC has already confirmed that Arrowverse outing Legends of Tomorrow will be showcased at Comic-Con at Home. Deadline also suggests that Also, DC Publishing division will have a presence at the online occasion.
While there is certainly considerable cost savings to the organizers to handle it virtually, many con attendees have been clamoring for in-person events for months, and with the threat of coronavirus dissipating in the summer months, in combination with millions of vaccines and the availability of masks, it’s not clear why SDCC opted to go virtual again this summer.
The good news is that the live edition of San Diego Comic-Con will take place November 26-28. Only time will tell as to whether Marvel Studios or Warner Bros. /DC Films will turn up then. Meanwhile, DC Comics publishing has panels scheduled throughout the weekend long event, with writers and artists such as John Ridley, Mariko Tamaki, Tom Taylor, Grant Morrison and Becky Cloonan who plan to give fans a sneak preview at the upcoming Batman: Fear State event, DC Horror line of comics, Wonder Woman’s 80th Anniversary celebrations, theupcoming changes that are in store for the Man of Steel.
