Marvel’s trailer for Captain America: Symbol of Truth and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty shows off Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson’s new status quo.
Marvel Comics has released a trailer promoting its two upcoming Captain America series.
The video opens with audio from Captain America’s 1960s cartoon series overlaying a montage of Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson’s history together. After the footage highlights Falcon’s first appearance, the duo’s adventures during Civil War and Sam’s rise as Captain America, the screen turns black, cutting to reveal Mark Brook’s wraparound cover to Captain America #0. The trailer then flashes various images from Captain America: Symbol of Truth and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty while promoting both titles with the tagline “TWO SHIELDS. TWO CAPTAINS. ONE NATION.”
Sam and Steve’s new directions begin in April’s Captain America #0. Written by Tochi Onyebuchi, Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and illustrated by Mattia De Iulis, the special issue focuses on the relationship between the two Captains as they discuss the next chapter of their lives. Unfortunately, their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of Arnim Zola, an evil scientist whose actions have had dire consequences for the pair in the past.
Following this release, Sam strikes out on his own in the pages of Captain America: Symbol of Truth, written by Onyebuchi and illustrated by R.B. Silva. As Sam settles back into the role of Captain America, he comes to realize that not everybody is happy to see a Black man step up as the embodiment of the United States’ ideals. Furthermore, Onyebuchi says the “Truth” in Symbol of Truth refers to a greater conspiracy tied to the heart of the narrative, one Sam addresses head-on. “What is it going to look like when Sam runs up against the people who would wish to manipulate him for their own ends in terms of furthering ‘America’s interests’ abroad? What does it mean to be the ‘Symbol of Truth’ in that context?”
With Sam picking up some of Steve’s responsibilities, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty gives the World War II veteran a chance to reevaluate his relationship with America. Set to release in June, the series will be written by Kelly and Lanzing and illustrated by Carmen Carnero. Kelly claims the real-world political upheaval that has unfolded across the United States in recent years has informed Steve’s internal conflict. “We’ve seen a radical shift in our country and, especially for a lot of young people, a real fury and disappointment at what our country has started to do to itself.” However, don’t expect Steve to give up on America, as Lanzing explains that the classic Cap will still answer the call of duty. “We’ll see what it means when he finds a threat that truly needs his version of Captain America, and what he has to step up to become that.”
Before Sam and Steve embark on their journeys, they’ll have to deal with the emergence of a new Hydra cell. In Captain America/Iron Man, Steve chases after Veronica Eden, a young woman who clashed with Sam and the Winter Soldier while earning her title as Hydra Supreme. After escaping police custody, Eden has aligned herself with Fifty-One, a member of the 50-State Initiative who now wears the armor of Hydra Cap.
