Marvel Pits Hulk vs. Thor, Promising To Change Both Avengers Forever

[ad_1]

Hulk and Thor writer Donny Cates teams with artist Martin Coccolo for the five-part Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War anniversary crossover.

Marvel Comics has announced Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War, an upcoming five-part crossover event that promises to have a “shocking impact” on both the Green Goliath and the God of Thunder moving forward.

Banner of War teams current Thor and Hulk writer Donny Cates with penciler Martin Coccolo (X-Force, Green Lantern) and cover artist Gary Frank. The crossover kicks off on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 with Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1. The “Banner of War” arc will continue into May’s Thor #25 and Hulk #7 before concluding in June with Thor #26 and Hulk #8. Coccolo’s interior artwork from Banner of War Alpha is sure to evoke memories of Thor and Hulk’s battle from the 2017 Marvel Studios film Thor: Ragnarok.

“Banner of War” celebrates the 60th anniversary of both the Hulk and Thor. The Hulk was created by the duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, whereas Marvel’s depiction of Thor was created be Lee, Kirby and Larry Lieber. Both characters debuted in 1962 — Hulk in The Incredible Hulk #1 and Thor in Journey into Mystery #83. Cates has written Thor since Marvel relaunched the title in early 2020, with the writer also taking the reins on Hulk when that book was relaunched earlier this year.

“[T]he story promises to deliver Thor and Hulk’s most glorious battle yet and the showdown will have a shocking impact on both characters’ futures,” Marvel wrote in its official press release. “In the aftermath of the opening arc of Hulk and the ‘God of Hammers’ arc currently unfolding in Thor, both Bruce Banner and Thor Odinson have both undergone massive changes, but one thing remains constant — their heated rivalry! When mysterious circumstances bring them into conflict once more, will the God of Thunder be able to triumph against a Bruce Banner who can now control his rage?”

“Well, I was a little surprised that Marvel approached me to write this, if I’m being honest,” said Cates. “I’m mostly known for writing very small, very quiet, intimate comics, so I had to — ha!! Sorry. Couldn’t keep that up. Yeah, this is gonna be bonkers as hell, guys. We’re going to break everything! Happy birthday, Hulk and Thor! Hope you enjoy massive amounts of violence!”

“Where do I even start? I get to celebrate Hulk and Thor’s 60th anniversaries, which is already amazing and a dream come true, but I get to do it with an insane script by the great Donny Cates and the support of an incredible group of editors? That’s just ridiculous!” added Coccolo. “I’m absolutely honored by this opportunity and I’ve been giving it my 100 percent. Hopefully readers will agree. I can only say to all the fans out there to strap yourselves ’cause this is going to be a wild ride!”

Written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Martin Coccolo, Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 goes on sale April 27, 2022 from Marvel Comics.
