Marvel has shown the end of the world a multitude of times. From the epic Marvel Zombies universe to the Punisher’s brutal warpath through the apocalypse in Marvel’s darkest The End future, Marvel has shown various ways for the end of humanity to occur. With characters like Galactus, Thanos and the various symbiote entities, it’s not surprising that some stories would end with the eradication of humanity. “The End of Humanity” in Carnage: Black, White & Blood revealed another apocalyptic future, and it may be Marvel’s darkest yet, thanks to Carnage.
Much like the events of Marvel Zombies, “The End of Humanity’s” civilization has already been destroyed by a horrific tragedy. It is now over a thousand years since the end of the world and scavengers travel extensive lengths looking for supplies. The conditions are tough as the sky remains an ominous red color and the atmosphere causes constant pain. Humanity has thinned out considerably, with a survivor named Caden stated that he had only ever met 20 people his whole life – and 16 of those are already dead. This left him in the company of three others who treated him with little regard.
Caden was the only member of his group that was not equipped with armor. The other survivors were lucky enough to find the armors of Spider-Man, Locust, and Iron Man. The survivors entered the ruins of Avengers Tower in search of food and armor for Caden. While they did find Captain America’s shield, they were unable to find any armor. Caden had found something else while searching the ruins, a vial of a strange red substance.
Since Caden was the lowest ranking member of the crew, he hid the vial away so that it would not be taken from him. After the others had fallen asleep, Caden took the opportunity to inspect the substance. As he opened the vial, he was immediately bonded with Carnage. Carnage claimed to have been asleep for a long time and noted that he needed sustenance to survive. Much to Caden’s horror, Carnage decapitated the member wearing Spider-Man’s Spider-Armor MK I and devoured the man. Caden pled with the symbiote but its hunger had not been satiated.
It noticed the woman wearing Locust Armor and made quick work of her before being attacked by the leader who was wearing Iron Man’s armor while holding Captain America’s shield. Carnage mocked the man for being such a weak individual who up with such legendary weapons. Carnage ripped the man in half before venturing outside and heading north.
Though Caden had struggled with the merger at first, he soon began to bond emotionally with Carnage, stating that Carnage was his true savior. The leader of Caden’s team had heard a rumor that many survivors had gathered as a community in the north where the air would not sting as bad. Caden retained this information after his merge with Carnage and shared it with the symbiote. As Carnage needed more sustenance, he felt it was worth scouting out the supposed sanctuary. Carnage was surprised to find that the place actually did exist and even better, that all were welcome.
While civilization had been destroyed a thousand years prior, humanity still survived and there was hope that they could rebuild. Now that Carnage had found a base of survivors, that hope is beginning to fade. Carnage can make short work of that outpost and could quickly eradicate all humans within. Afterward, he would surely continue to seek out other outposts, continuing to eradicate humans until none were left.
While Carnage has always been one of Marvel’s more lethal villains, his ambitions were often limited by the scope of his powers. While that changed thanks to the wide-reaching ramifications of the symbiote god Knull’s attacks during Absolute Carnage and King in Black, this version of Carnage seems set to succeed where Knull failed. While nothing but a beaten-down, thinned-out populace in front of him, it likely won’t be too long before this Carnage is the cause of humanity’s extinction and the last living being on Earth.
