Marvel Is Releasing ‘IMAX Enhanced’ Versions of 13 Films on Disney+

A partnership between Disney+ and IMAX will see 13 MCU films brought to Disney+ with expanded quality.

Disney+ will be adding some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest hits to its new IMAX enhanced screening feature.

IMAX enhanced is an upcoming feature that will be available on Disney+ beginning Nov. 12 that allows users to watch select movies in an expanded aspect ratio of 1:90:1, the same unique ratio used to create the IMAX experience. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond explained that the decision to launch this initiative was created with the fans in mind, telling Marvel, “For more than a decade, IMAX has helped filmmakers take fans across the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters, and now that epic journey crosses into a new world: the home. IMAX, Disney, and Marvel Studios are giving the fans what they want: the most immersive viewing experience throughout the life of a Marvel Studios film, from exclusive theatrical release to the library at-home where they can now watch the Avengers assemble with more picture than ever before.”

At launch, 13 Marvel Studios films will be available to watch through IMAX enhanced. These include Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America: Civil War, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Iron Man, Thor: Ragnarok and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will debut on Disney+ and digital home video at the same time as this new feature.

This expansion to Disney+ comes at a time when digital streaming options have become a highly discussed part of many Hollywood blockbusters. Earlier this year, actor Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for contractual issues that arose as a result of Black Widow‘s streaming options. However, as theaters continue to recover from diminished box office revenue as a result of COVID-19, IMAX has proven to remain successful. Recent Q3 IMAX revenue reports show that audiences have been more likely to return to IMAX theaters, with customers returning in record-breaking numbers for blockbusters like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Dune and Eternals.

“We’re thrilled to create new value for Marvel fans and audiences on Disney+, and we’re looking forward to offering even more IMAX Enhanced functionality in the future,” Disney+ and ESPN+ President Michael Paull said.

The release of IMAX enhanced content coincides with the second anniversary of the launch of Disney+. To celebrate the occasion, the streaming platform will host Disney+ Day, a virtual event that sees the debut of Home Sweet Home Alone and the no-fee digital release of Jungle Cruise.
