Marvel’s X Lives of Wolverine variant covers highlight Logan’s unique legacy while showcasing the epic scale of the weekly X-Men storyline.

Marvel has released a new series of covers for its next major X-Men event, which is being billed as “the biggest Wolverine story of all time.”

Starting in January, the dual five-issue miniseries X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will come out on alternating weeks and have intertwining narratives that fit into one larger whole. Both books are from writer Benjamin Percy, with art by Joshua Cassara in X Lives of Wolverine and art by Federico Vicenti in X Deaths of Wolverine. To celebrate this pivotal plot, some of the comic book industry’s top artists are contributing covers to X Lives of Wolverine #1, including Adam Kubert, Peach Momoko, Ron Lim, Jorge Molina, Ed McGuinness, Joshua Cassara, Mark Bagley, Art Adams and collage artist Mr. Garcin. These covers call back to memorable moments in the life of James Howlett, aka Logan, aka Wolverine, highlighting the character’s unique legacy in comics.

Speaking on the epic scale of the storyline, Percy said, “I’m going to make a bold statement: I set out to write the greatest Wolverine story ever told.” The writer also explained that Logan’s past would play a key part in what Marvel is calling the X-Men’s Second Krakoan Age. “We’re creating a definitive platform that channels all the Wolverine stories that came before, while shredding our way into a wild future.”

In X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine, Wolverine travels through time on a mission to prevent the death of a key figure in mutant history. Along the way, Logan’s near-death experiences and greatest battles will be revisited as the hero is forced to relive his worst traumas. Though Marvel has yet to confirm who the mastermind behind Logan’s misery is, preview art for X Deaths of Wolverine shows Wolverine covered in a technological grid that is eerily reminiscent of the Transmode virus, a weapon used by the Technarchy. The structure of the dual series mimics the one used by Jonathan Hickman for his acclaimed series House of X and Powers of X.

Before Percy can change the landscape of the X-Men alongside Wolverine, the team has to make it through the fires of Inferno. The four-issue miniseries is the conclusion of Hickman’s tenure on the X-books and sees Krakoa’s Quiet Council at war with itself, as the return of Destiny threatens Moira MacTaggert’s dreams for mutantkind. At the same time, the deaths of Wolverine and X-Force aboard the Orchis Forge has provided the evil organization key knowledge about the X-Men’s resurrection protocols — information that could threaten life as they know it.
