Legion of X writer Simon Spurrier says that while Juggernaut joins Krakoa’s peacekeeping task force to bust some skulls, he has a deeper purpose.
Marvel’s new ongoing series Legion of X will reveal Juggernaut’s unique role on Krakoa.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, writer Si Spurrier opened up about Legion of X and why the different heroes enlist with Krakoa’s peacekeeping task force. The writer explained that while Nightcrawler aims to use the group to address mutant-on-mutant conflict through non-confrontational means, Juggernaut believes he’s there to beat people up and bring them to jail. However, Spurrier teased that this position will change as the series progresses, revealing Juggernaut’s true purpose. “His whole arc is about him having doubts, and it’s beautiful and wonderful to see,” Spurrier said. “There will be some early revelations about exactly why Professor X wanted him on Krakoa and spoilers! It’s not what he wants to do at all.”
Since debuting in X-Men #12 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Alex Toth, Juggernaut has been one of the team’s most popular antagonists. As the step-brother of Professor Charles Xavier, many fans incorrectly assume that Cain Marko’s superhuman strength comes from a mutant genome when in reality, it comes from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, a magical relic. Despite initially fighting against Xavier and his students, Juggernaut eventually joined multiple teams of mutants, including versions of the Exiles, Excalibur and the Uncanny X-Men. Legion of X looks to continue Juggernaut’s progress by welcoming him to Krakoa at the behest of Xavier.
Spurrier’s previous series, Way of X, addressed how Krakoa’s cycle of rebirth impacted the character’s religious beliefs, and Legion of X similarly examines the role of police in a superhuman society. The series will also see Juggernaut develop a close friendship with ForgetMeNot, a mutant who alters other people’s memories, which Spurrier said leads to some of the book’s best gags: “There’s a lot of comedy from the fact that Juggernaut has this partner who he keeps forgetting about every time he looks away.”
In addition to Nightcrawler, Juggernaut and ForgetMeNot, Legion of X will feature David Haller, aka Legion, the Son of Professor X. Marvel’s solicitation for the series’ debut teased that Legion will host Krakoa’s peacekeepers in a mind space called “The Altar.” Furthermore, Spurrier claims Legion of X will see Legion step up as a leader, though the character won’t be emulating his famous father. “There’s a lot of stuff in Legion of X about him deliberately seeking to be a different sort of leader than his dad,” Spurrier said. “He loves and respects Charles Xavier, but he makes no bones about the fact that Charles Xavier is a really bad parent.”
Written by Si Spurrier and drawn by Jan Bazaldua, Legion of X #1 goes on sale on April 20 from Marvel Comics.
