Marvel Gives Spider-Woman a Drastic and Dangerous New Look

[ad_1]

Amanda Conner and Dave Johnson give Spider-Woman a bold new look in a variant cover for Marvel’s Daredevil-centric crossover Devil’s Reign.

An upcoming variant cover for Spider-Woman will see Jessica Drew donning a new costume as part of Daredevil’s latest crossover.

In Devil’s Reign, Wilson Fisk’s war against Daredevil leads the former Kingpin to outlaw vigilante justice in New York in an attempt to turn the city against its heroes. Written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Marco Checchetto, the far-reaching consequences of Fisk’s actions will impact everyone who calls NYC home, including the original Spider-Woman. Marvel will be releasing a series of variant covers across many of the tie-ins for the event, with various heroes donning new looks based on classic Daredevil villains. And while Jessica Drew has had her fair share of costume changes over the last few years, her Crossbones-inspired attire might be her deadliest look yet.

The cover, which is drawn by the oft-paired team of Amanda Conner and Dave Johnson, shows Jessica Drew ditching her webbed-armpits for a sleeveless ensemble. With a gun in one hand and a grenade in the other, Spider-Woman stands in a puddle of blood, staring at the reader as if to challenge them. The trademark triangle on her chest is joined with a pair of bones that mimic the iconic Jolly Roger design worn by Crossbones. The villain has made multiple appearances in recent issues of Daredevil and will be part of a new team of Thunderbolts during Devil’s Reign, though it remains to be seen if he’ll be crossing paths with Spider-Woman herself.

Since returning to her own series in 2020, Spider-Woman has been plagued by the ghosts of her past. Not only did Drew discover that her long-lost mother was actually alive (kind of), she was shocked to find out that she has a brother named Michael as well as a niece named Rebecca. When Michael eventually destroyed their budding family dynamic, Rebecca took after aunt Spider-Woman and joined Marvel’s Spider-Verse as a superhero of her own design.

Speaking on crafting Devil’s Reign alongside Checchetto, Zdarsky said, “We’ve been working toward this point from the beginning of our Daredevil run. Fisk has struggled with his ambitions during our story and has finally settled into a sense of contentment being mayor of NYC. Which means it’s time to pull the rug out from under him. Nothing lasts forever and he now finds himself on a rampage against Daredevil and the heroes of the city.”

While Devil’s Reign is currently set to begin on Dec. 1, fans looking to pick up Spider-Woman #18 will have to wait a little bit longer for its release on Dec. 29. In addition to the variant cover by Conner and Johnson, Marvel’s solicit for the issue teases that Spider-Woman will find herself on the Kingpin’s list of enemies. Fisk’s all-out war against vigilantes will target Jessica’s family, forcing Spider-Woman to once again jump into the line of fire to protect those closest to her.
