Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX and VC’s Joe Caramagna, gives Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic a massive power-up.
The first chapter in Marvel’s titular event, Reckoning War Alpha opens with the destruction of the moon, which causes debris to start raining down on Earth. This ends up seemingly being the prelude to an invasion by the Badoon. Much of the book thus involves the Fantastic Four and various other Earth-based teams and heroes fighting off the invasion and attempting to save the planet.
Towards the end of Reckoning War Alpha, the Fantastic Four are in space and find a returned Nick Fury, who reveals a group called “The Reckoning” is responsible for what’s happening. This leads to Reed accessing the Cyclopedia Universum, which stores the knowledge of all the Watchers. This provides him with information on the origin of the Watchers and the Reckoning, revealing an ancient power struggle between the two groups. The side effect of this revelation is that Reed gains knowledge of “everything.” It is not clear at this time just what that means or what the repercussions will be for the character.
Dubbed a story over 15 years in the making, the original plot synopsis for Reckoning War teased it exposing the Marvel Universe’s original secret war, which will result in major repercussions for everyone. Reckoning War Alpha #1 is the first part of the series, which will continue with Fantastic Four #40 on Feb. 16.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four first appeared in 1961’s Fantastic Four #1. The main version of the team consists of Mister Fantastic, Sue Richards/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing. The Fantastic Four received their powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a trip to space. Since their debut, the Fantastic Four have remained immensely popular, and their adventures have been adapated to several mediums, including animation and live-action films. Currently, Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts is slated to helm a Fantastic Four movie for Marvel Studios.
