A new teaser for the upcoming Kang the Conqueror-focused Timeless one-shot promises major ramifications for the Marvel Universe.
The Marvel Universe will never be the same in the upcoming one-shot Timeless, and a new teaser hints that a mysterious figure known as Anatoly Petrov will play a major role in the event.
CBR can exclusively reveal the teaser, which shows a broken clock face with Kang the Conqueror and another figure — presumably the aforementioned Anatoly Petrov — laden atop it. More details are promised in December, when Timeless — written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Kev Walker, Greg Land and Mark Bagley — goes on sale.
Timeless was announced in August as an event centered on Kang that would see the time-traveler facing off against a threatening new timeline that would put Marvel’s mainline 616 universe at risk. In an interview with CBR, MacKay revealed that the timeline would undergo “significant trauma” in front of Kang and set the stage for future Marvel stories in 2022 and beyond.
“…Kang is put in the fascinating position of not knowing what happens next,” MacKay said of the series’ shifting timeline shenanigans. “Things that should play out differently, others happen as expected, while yet others are completely new fabrications of a shaken timeline. There will certainly be plenty to speculate upon and some very exciting hints for what is to come over the next couple of years.”
MacKay added that Timeless would serve as a character study for Kang, who “pursues excellence in all things…and has at his disposal everything in history to test himself against.” In order to humanize the arrogant warlord and make him somewhat more approachable for new readers, the story would also be told through the viewpoint of a “companion that Kang has plucked from the timeline to accompany him on his adventures, so we’re with them as Kang goes through the trials and tribulations of oncoming chronal collapse.”
The identity of this companion has yet to be revealed, though it may be the mysterious Anatoly Petrov. There is no Marvel character with such a name, though a former Soviet Union general named Armand Petrov seized control of the Eastern European country of Chernaya and faced off against Frank Castle in 2017’s Punisher #218, meeting his end in Issue #223. A character named Anton Petrov also appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., seeking to build a sanctuary for Inhumans on Earth. There is currently no indication on whether the new Timeless character is related to these individuals or if the name is simply a coincidence.
Timeless goes on sale Dec. 22 from Marvel.
