Thanos is poised to menace the Marvel Universe once again, and this time the Mad Titan is looking to possess and wield the hammer of Thor.
As the Marvel superheroes scramble to recover the Infinity Stones that have resurfaced around the Earth, the villainous Thanos has also reappeared to menace the Marvel Universe. In addition to confronting the Eternals as the cosmic race rises again, Thor has been receiving visions of Thanos emerging triumphant and slaughtering all who oppose him while leading an army of the dead. Perhaps more troubling than the implication that the Mad Titan will complete his victorious conquest of the Marvel Universe, Thor’s vision also reveals that Thanos now not only wields a fully powered Infinity Gauntlet but Thor’s signature weapon Mjolnir. Given the nature of the Infinity Stones and recent changes to the Asgardian war hammer, Thanos now appears capable of wielding the enchanted weapon.
If there is one character in the Marvel Universe that holds a particularly infamous mastery over the Infinity Gauntlet, it’s Thanos. The cosmic supervillain once channeled the omnipotent power of all six Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all sentient life in the universe with a mere snap of his fingers. Among the Infinity Stones Thanos has experience in handling is the Reality Stone which, as its name aptly denotes, is able to manipulate the rules of reality. The Reality Stone’s potential is further boosted when interfaced with the Power Stone, which naturally augments the capabilities of the other five Infinity Stones. With both Infinity Stones in his possession, Thanos being able to overcome Mjolnir’s enchantment to lift it should be not a particularly daunting feat.
However, Thanos may soon be able to lift Mjolnir even without the benefit of possessing the Reality and Power Stones. Ever since Thor ascended to the throne of Asgard, changing his priorities as he succeeded Odin to led his people, Odin’s enchantment over Mjolnir has noticeably been in a state of flux. Everyone from Iron Man and Loki to an unassuming car mechanic in Oklahoma has been able to wield Mjolnir for themselves while Thor has quietly found the hammer growing progressively heavier for him to lift. While the full extent and origins of these changes to Mjolnir has not yet been disclosed, these fluctuations visibly trouble Thor given his Thanos-dominated nightmares.
One other aspect of Thor’s visions of Thanos’ bloody victory is the fact that Thanos doesn’t have the Infinity Stones fitted into their usual gauntlet at all. Instead, Thanos has fitted Mjolnir with all six Infinity Stones while his free hand appears to have a gauntlet connected to the Black Winter, a cosmic entity that threatened to consume the Marvel Universe shortly after Thor was crowned King of Asgard. With these significant modifications made to Mjolnir, Thanos may have incorporated his own enchantments or changes to Mjolnir while channeling the electric potential of the Norse God of Thunder’s weapon.
An epic showdown between Thor and Thanos seems inevitable, and the character’s recent appearances suggest that this confrontation is coming sooner rather than later. With the Infinity Stones back in play and Odin’s enchantment over Mjolnir waning, Thanos is poised to fulfill Thor’s dark visions and become more threatening than ever.
Odin placed an enchantment to ensure that only those worthy enough could wield the mighty powers of Thor but, with Odin no longer on the throne and not accounting for the reality-altering effects of the Infinity Stones, Mjolnir may be about to fall into the wrong hands.
