Darkhawk #1, written by Kyle Higgins with art by Juanan Ramírez, revamps the ’90s hero and introduces Connor Young to the Darkhawk armor.
Marvel is introducing audiences to a new version of the cosmic superhero Darkhawk in Darkhawk #1, the first of a five-issue limited series, written by Kyle Higgins with artwork by Juanan Ramírez.
As revealed by Marvel, Connor Young, an aspiring basketball player, gains control of the Darkhawk armor after he comes into contact with its extraterrestrial Raptor Amulet.
Higgins previously said that the new Darkhawk drew inspiration from other recent characters he wrote, including the Power Rangers and Ultraman, and was designed to be a contemporary superhero for the “current generation.”
Chris Powell, created in 1991 by Tom Defalco and Mike Manley, served as the original Darkhawk. Dubbed the “greatest hero of the nineties” in his solo series, the character was a teenager who gained his powers from an amulet that let him swap places with a sentient armor created by the Sh’iar race, and he battled the Hobgoblin alongside Spider-Man in his first story arc. Darkhawk’s solo comic would go on to span 50 issues, and the character later became known for his cameos in multiple team books, including Guardians of the Galaxy, New Warriors and West Coast Avengers.
Most recently, Darkhawk celebrated his 30th anniversary with Darkhawk: Heart of the Hawk, a one-shot written by Dan Abnett, Kyle Higgins and Danny Fingeroth, with art by Le Beau Underwood, Andrea Di Vito, Juanan Ramirez and Mike Manley. The issue saw Chris Powell lost in space, finding evidence of a mysterious Shadow War and releasing his Raptor Amulet to find a worthy successor.
Darkhawk #1, written by Higgins and penciled by Ramírez with variant covers from the likes of Leinil Francis Yu, Ron Lim and Mico Suayan, releases on Aug. 25.
