Marvel Announces New One-Shot Starring Fan-Rejected Mutants

[ad_1]

Marvel Comics announces Secret X-Men, a one-shot starring the mutants fans DIDN’T vote for to be part of the the main team.

The mutants who just missed out on joining the X-Men are now the last hope for the future of Professor Xavier’s daughter.

Marvel Comics has announced Secret X-Men, a new one-shot from writer by Tini Howard and artist Francesco Mobili. The book brings together the mutants who were not elected to join the X-Men when Marvel called on fans to choose who would be next to join the iconic team. These once-rejected heroes are uniquely qualified to save the daughter of Professor X and Lilandra. When Shi’ar Empress Xandra goes missing, co-captains Cannonball and Sunspot will summon a team of their own design to save the future of one of the galaxy’s biggest empires.

“This is the perfect team for an intergalactic X-Men mission,” said Howard “I hope they didn’t forget anything important!” The writer, who is also behind Excalibur’s war in Otherworld, also expressed her excitement for the unique opportunity to take the group of underappreciated heroes out for a spin. “We had to do it, yeah? And I jumped at the chance to tell the story while I had the time.”

Earlier this year, fans were given an opportunity to participate in the X-Vote, an online contest which would select the next member of Marvel’s premiere mutant team. While it was Polaris who ultimately joined the X-Men, the outrageous response to the different candidates inspired the creation of Secret X-Men #1. Now, readers can see their personal favorites in action as Sunspot, Cannonball, Marrow, Boom-Boom, Tempo, Forge, Banshee, Strong Guy and Armor unite for the first (and probably only) time.

Currently, the X-Men are in the midst of Inferno, a four-issue miniseries that reshapes the landscape of the franchise. In it, Mystique secretly resurrects one of the X-Men’s oldest foes after being lied to and manipulated by Professor Xavier. This decision causes an uproar amongst the Quiet Council that threatens to shatter the bond that ties together all of mutantkind. The series is the last from Krakoan architect Jonathan Hickman, who will be taking a hiatus from the X-Men forward. It also lays the foundation for the dual five-issue miniseries X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine, which will collectively tell one story that ushers in the Second Krakoan Age of X-Men.

Though Secret X-Men definitely stars one of the more-eclectic casts of mutants in recent memory, they won’t be the weirdest faces getting a spotlight in February. Also announced for the month is the new ongoing series X-Cellent, written by Peter Milligan and drawn by the team of Michael and Laura Allred. The long-delayed title is a sequel to the cult-classic X-Statix and stars a team of superpowered celebrities with little interest in actual heroics, who arguably cause as many problems as they solve.

Written by Tini Howard and illustrated by Francesco Mobili, Secret X-Men #1 goes on sale Feb. 9, 2022 from Marvel Comics.
