The X-Men are one of Marvel’s premiere superteams and also one of the most powerful. The X-Men walk a hard road. Not only do they protect the Earth from threats that would destroy it, they also have to protect themselves from the racism of humanity. The X-Men have always consisted of some of the most powerful heroes around and have been known to go to some extremes to fulfill their mandates.
There have been times when members of the group went pretty far, sometimes using their powers in a villainous manner. Theirs is a difficult mission and they’ve been forced to do some hard things to win.
10 Magneto Has Used The Same Powers As A Hero And Villain
Magneto was once one of the X-Men’s greatest foes, but he eventually joined with the team to help protect mutantkind after Scarlet Witch’s depowering of the vast majority of the race. He’s always been one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, his magnetic powers giving him an advantage over just about everyone.
One thing that hasn’t changed with Magneto is how he uses his powers. While he doesn’t kill nearly as much as he once did, he still has a tendency to use his powers in the same ways he always did. He’s not one to mess around, so him using his powers in that way makes a lot of sense.
9 Professor X Has No Problems Using His Mental Powers In Shady Ways
Professor X has long been one of the most hypocritical heroes in the Marvel Universe. While he’s done a lot for mutantkind over the years, he left a trail of wiped and manipulated minds behind him. These aren’t exactly the actions of a heroic man, but Xavier’s pragmatism has often beat out any sense of morality the man had.
If asked, Professor X would explain that all of the things he does are because of the dire straits mutants find themselves in, which isn’t exactly wrong. Then one remembers that Xavier enslaved the Danger Room AI after it gained sentience and all of his protestations seem a bit hypocritical.
8 Wolverine Has Knife Hands
Wolverine has grown a lot over the years, but usually, guys with knife hands aren’t exactly the hero of stories. Wolverine’s unbreakable claws are one of his defining features and have made him one of the dangerous heroes in the Marvel Universe, but most of the time, an angry guy running at people with knife hands isn’t going to be considered a hero.
The only other popular character in pop culture with knife hands is Freddy Krueger and he’s not at all considered a hero. On top of that, Wolverine’s tendency to black out in berserker rages and kill a bunch of people isn’t the most heroic skill either.
7 Emma Frost Tricked The World Into Thinking Cyclops Was Alive
Telepathy is a power that is basically built on lies and manipulation and the X-Men have long held the monopoly on telepaths. Most of the time, they use their powers for good but other times, they go a little far. Emma Frost was once a villain, so she got used to manipulating the minds of others for her own gain, something she did upon the discovery of the M-Pox.
Cyclops died of the disease and Emma believed that releasing that info would be disastrous, as mutants needed a leader to fight back against the Inhumans. She used her powers to make everyone think Cyclops was alive, leading mutants in attacks against the Inhumans before making it look like Black Bolt killed him. It was manipulation of the highest order and closer to what a villain would do.
6 Beast Used Enemy Technology To Take Control Of An Entire Country
The technology of the Marvel Universe is often like a superpower and the mutant nation of Krakoa learned that the hard way. The nation of Terra Verde refused Krakoan drugs and treaties, instead developing their own telefloronic technology to even things up with the country. X-Force was deployed when Krakoan interests were attacked and Beast was able to get his hands on some of the tech.
He used it to basically take control of the entire country and create bugs that would allow him to spy on other nations at their embassies. This backfired when someone else took control of the technology, causing a situation that was almost disastrous for the nascent mutant nation.
5 Wolfsbane Is A Werewolf
Werewolves are one of those folkloric monsters that have haunted humanity for centuries. Strangely enough, there have been several superheroes over the years who have had werewolf powers, including Wolfsbane. Wolfsbane’s mutant powers allowed her to either become a human/wolf hybrid, like the Wolfman, or an actual wolf.
She is faster and stronger than normal humans and her wolfish nature makes it easy for her to fly off the handle. While she can’t make other werewolves by biting, just the fact that she’s a werewolf is enough.
4 Bishop Has Tried To Use Time Travel To Mess With Timeline Since He Joined The Team
Bishop’s entire MO has been about keeping his future from happening, meaning he went back in time with the express purpose of changing the timeline, which is pretty much what most villains with time machines try to do.
It’s been beneficial, as he succeeded in undoing the Age of Apocalypse, but it also drove him to try and kill Hope Summers, chasing her and Cable throughout time in order to stop his future from happening.
3 Magik Used To Lose Control Of Herself And Become The Darkchylde
The Rasputin family is full of powerful mutants and the youngest, Illyana Rasputin, is probably the most powerful. Magik’s teleportational abilities are pretty great, but they pale in comparison to her magical abilities which come from years spent trying to survive in the hellish realm of Limbo. These magic powers held a dark side, though.
For years, Magik would sometimes lose control of herself and become the Darkchylde, a powerful demonic version of herself that her teammates have had to deal with many times. While it hasn’t happened in a long time, the fear of her falling to the Darkchylde again is always there.
2 Cyclops Lost Himself To The Dark Phoenix
Cyclops has always been one of the most powerful X-Men, using his devastating optic blasts to fight for mutants. Things got bad for him when he became leader of the diminished mutant race, as he was forced to make harder and harder decisions. This would come to a head when he gained the Phoenix Force, as he led mutants in a crusade against the Avengers.
Eventually, he would fall to the power of the Phoenix and become the Dark Phoenix, killing Charles Xavier and forcing the X-Men and Avengers to team up to stop him. His dalliance with the Phoenix Force started with the best of intentions and ended in tragedy.
1 Jean Grey Is Fueled By The Phoenix Force
Jean Grey is one of the most powerful mental talents on the planet. Trained by Professor X, she’s nowhere near as shady as Xavier or even Emma Frost but she has got up to a lot of the same things they have. It’s sort of just how telepaths roll and while she tries not to, sometimes she’s forced into things she’d rather not do.
Most people mistake her for the Phoenix Jean, but that was a simulacrum created by the Phoenix Force. She has used the Phoenix Force since, although she personally has never actually fallen to its power and become the Dark Phoenix.
