Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin of Crime, is one of the most dangerous individuals on Earth in Marvel Comics. He’s just a man, albeit a massive man with great physical strength, but still a mortal man in a world full of gods and monsters. He’s battled many heroes over the years, most famously the Amazing Spider-Man and Daredevil, who he’s conquered on occasion.
With an iron will and a powerful analytical mind, the Kingpin has outmaneuvered and outmatched a number of heroes who’ve been unfortunate enough to cross his path. He’s proven time and time again that not all victories are won through fisticuffs and brawls between heroes and villains. Sometimes, victory is won through planning and positioning.
10 Kingpin Evaded Being Killed By The Punisher And Left Him To Be Arrested In Punisher MAX
The MAX line of Punisher comics takes place on an alternate Earth where heroes aren’t running around New York at all hours of the day. During the second run of Punisher MAX by Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon, this version of Frank Castle deals with the likes of Bullseye and the Kingpin. After a bloody war against Kingpin’s criminal organization, Frank duels Bullseye, seemingly kills him, and then confronts Kingpin. However, Bullseye attacks Punisher one last time before knocking him out and dying in a fall. Fisk abandons the scene, leaving the Punisher to be arrested by the authorities. While Bullseye physically caused Frank’s capture, the victory goes to Kingpin.
9 Elektra Was Under Kingpin’s Thumb For A While
Despite her affection for Daredevil, there was a time Elektra Natchios couldn’t give up the life of an assassin. She was Kingpin’s top killer for an extended period of time while Bullseye wasn’t in Fisk’s favor. However, Elektra found her loyalties further at odds when Fisk ordered her to kill Ben Urich and Foggy Nelson. Thankfully, she didn’t fulfill either contract.
Fisk was increasingly displeased with Elektra, and Bullseye ultimately killed her to gain Fisk’s preference. This is another situation where Bullseye did the legwork but, once again, the Kingpin came out on top with a more brutal and ruthless assassin in his employ. Of course, Elektra was later resurrected to fight a war against the Hand.
8 Echo’s Entire Upbringing Was Manipulated And Twisted By Wilson Fisk
Maya Lopez’s father was business partners with Wilson Fisk years ago. However, the two had a falling out that ended in Fisk killing Maya’s father. She didn’t know about this for years, and Fisk took the responsibility of raising Maya. When she reached adulthood, Fisk told her that Daredevil was responsible for her father’s death.
As Echo, Maya tried to kill Daredevil more than once, despite striking up a romantic relationship with Matt Murdock as Maya Lopez. Eventually, the two discovered one another’s secret identities, and Echo uncovered the truth about Fisk and her father. Regardless, Echo and Daredevil couldn’t mend things romantically and the scars left by Fisk never fully healed. Echo did try to rectify things by blinding the Kingpin, but he later had his vision restored through reconstructive surgery.
7 Daredevil Has Suffered A Number Of Losses To The Kingpin
Daredevil has been at war with Kingpin more often than even Spider-Man. The two have physically sparred multiple times, and each has been victorious over the other from time to time. That said, it’s notable that Kingpin was the victor in their first showdown.
Other victories won by the Kingpin include exposing Daredevil’s secret identity to the FBI, getting Matt Murdock arrested by the feds, and becoming the Mayor of New York City despite Daredevil’s many efforts to depose him. In fact, Fisk is still the mayor in Marvel Comics, with things seemingly coming to a head with the upcoming Devil’s Reign story by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.
6 Kingpin Forced Iron Fist Into Betraying His Friends In The Ultimate Universe
In the Ultimate Marvel Universe (where Miles Morales originally appeared), a team of heroes calling themselves the Ultimate Knights started an operation to bring down the Kingpin. However, their plans repeatedly failed, and it was revealed that the Kingpin had a mole inside the team.
That mole was revealed to be the Iron Fist, whose family was being threatened by the Kingpin. Of all the members of the team, Shang-Chi took it the hardest because of his past with Danny Rand. As a result, Kingpin got the better of Iron Fist and made him a liability to his comrades.
5 Kingpin Would Have Killed Captain America If Not For The Falcon
Years ago, Kingpin had a violent confrontation with Captain America in Captain America #147 by Gary Friedrich and Sal Buscema. The two men fought viciously in a duel with each scoring heavy blows against the other.
However, it seemed that Kingpin was going to take the victory. He managed to hold Captain America in a grapple that threatened to shatter Steve Rogers’ spine. Thankfully, the Falcon and Redwing arrived before this could come to pass, and they were able to stop Fisk from killing Cap.
4 Kingpin Stole The Symbiote And Shot Eddie Brock Dead In An Alternate Universe
On an alternate Earth taking place in 100th Anniversary Special Spider-Man #1 by Sean Ryan and In-Hyuk Lee, the Kingpin had spent years and large amounts of money to slowly transform the Venom symbiote into a techno-organic creature that he could control.
This plan succeeded and Fisk was able to usurp the symbiote from Eddie Brock. After doing so, Fisk shot Brock in the head, killing him. This led to a brutal showdown between Fisk-Venom and Spider-Man. Peter was narrowly able to use a combination of skill and technology to avenge Eddie’s death and take down Kingpin.
3 Spider-Man Discovered Not All Victories Are Physical Thanks To The Kingpin
Spider-Man has had his fair share of struggles with the Kingpin before, and they’ve often ended with at least a small victory for Spider-Man. However, the Web-Head has rarely been able to completely shut down the Kingpin’s operations. The worst loss for Spider-Man came when he exposed his identity to the public in the lead-up to the Superhuman Civil War.
Fisk, from inside prison, hired a hitman to try and take out Peter Parker at his home. The hitman failed in that objective but mortally wounded Aunt May. Spider-Man retaliated by breaking into Fisk’s prison and beating him in front of a captive audience of inmates. Parker threatened to kill Fisk if he ever did something like this again, but that didn’t solve the fact that Aunt May was likely going to die. This prompted Peter Parker and Mary Jane to make their infamous deal with Mephisto in which Aunt May would be healed and the world would forget that Peter Parker was Spider-Man at the cost of Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage. All this was still a victory for Kingpin in the end, as he forced Spider-Man to make a deal with the literal devil to undo the damage caused by Fisk’s actions. Plus, it showed Wilson Fisk could still leave Spider-Man helpless if he wanted to.
2 The Ghost Rider Found Himself Completely Controlled By The Kingpin
During the Shadowland story by Andy Diggle and Billy Tan, Daredevil was possessed by the Beast of the Hand and ruling the organization inside a fortress-like prison in Hell’s Kitchen. This, along with Daredevil publicly murdering Bullseye, prompted the Avengers to mobilize a team of street-level heroes including Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Spider-Man, and others to shut Daredevil and the Hand down.
Kingpin had his own plans to end this. He used an ancient scroll to summon the Ghost Rider, the Spirit of Vengeance, to do his bidding. Ghost Rider was helpless to resist Fisk’s commands, meaning that one of the most powerful forces on Earth was, for a while, merely a puppet of the Kingpin.
1 The X-Men Lost A Cure To The Legacy Virus To Kingpin
At one point, Kingpin was a part of the Stark-Fujikawa corporation. At the same time, the Legacy Virus was ravaging the mutant community and the X-Men plus Shang-Chi were tracking something called the Elixir Vitae, which they believed could be a cure for the Legacy Virus.
Unfortunately for them, Fisk had possession of Elixir Vitae and was planning on using it to become unfathomably rich. The X-Men had no means of coercing the formula out of Kingpin or taking the Elixir that he had, so Storm destroyed the Elixir to keep Fisk from profiting from it. Regardless, they were soundly defeated by Kingpin’s greed in this instance, and the Legacy Virus continued to ravage the mutant world while Fisk remained still rich and powerful.
