Avengers comics, like any series of stories, want to give the reader the unexpected. That can be kind of difficult when you’ve been running for close to 60 years, as any story a creative team can come up with probably has a similar counterpart somewhere in Avengers history–if not another comic series altogether.
As a result, creative teams will try to come up with something shocking. They try to deliver a twist or a reveal that will genuinely surprise the reader and every once in a while, they will succeed and genuinely shock the reader. Sometimes, a team of writers, artists, letterers, and editors will deliver a big twist that will stick with readers forever.
10 The Initial Reveal Of The Illuminati And Its Membership
The Illuminati made its first appearance in New Avengers #7 by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven. Its true purposes were only hinted at during this initial reveal, and it was expanded upon in a full Illuminati miniseries by Bendis, Brian Reed, and Jim Cheung.
A reveal like this completely new, as it hinted at a sinister streak in many of the most beloved Marvel Heroes. Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Professor Xavier, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, and Namor have been working behind the scenes this entire time and had been shaping much of Marvel history, even accidentally becoming a catalyst for some of the most devastating Marvel stories.
9 Michael Korvac Actually Killing All Of The Avengers And Guardians
The coming of Michael Korvac was accompanied by a lot of mystery and ominous intoning. The Guardians of the Galaxy came back from the future looking for the absent Korvac, and heroes like Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and Moondragon knew of an imminent disaster.
Then the Avengers and Guardians approached Korvac, and he just killed them all–rather effortlessly. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were but pests to this unfathomably powerful being, and they all died. The day was only saved through the psychic intervention of Moondragon, who convinced Korvac to undo the damage he had done. Korvac complied, only to wipe himself from existence. His death was as sudden and unsettling as his arrival.
8 Thor Might Be A Child Of The Phoenix Instead Of Freyja Or Gaea
This is a rather recent reveal from the “Enter the Phoenix” story by Jason Aaron and Juann Cabal. While battling the Phoenix, Thor is assailed by visions of a former human Phoenix host from the year 1 million BC. She begins intoning about Thor actually being her son.
The identity of Thor’s mother has been a matter of contention before, not helped by Odin’s promiscuity. Readers already knew that Freyja was not the mother of Thor–instead, it was the Elder God Gaea. However, this throws that into contention as well, with Thor’s mother possibly being tied to another significant part of Marvel mythology.
7 Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Are Actually The Children Of Magneto
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver first made their appearance in X-Men #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They were part of Magneto’s original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but they later abandoned the team and joined the Avengers. They believed their parents to be the Maximoffs, but this came into question with Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 by Bill Mantlo and Rick Leonardi.
This comic revealed that Wanda and Pietro’s biological father was actually Magneto all along, and he had left them on Wundagore Mountain in the hands of the High Evolutionary all those years ago.
6 Wait, Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Aren’t Actually The Children Of Magneto
However, this shocking revelation was undone more recently in Avengers & X-Men: AXIS #7 by Rick Remender and Adam Kubert. During a battle between a corrupted Scarlet Witch against Quicksilver and Magneto, Wanda casts a spell intended to kill those related to her in the immediate vicinity. This seemingly kills Pietro but leaves Magneto unaffected, once again calling Wanda and Pietro’s parentage into question.
It is later revealed by the High Evolutionary that Wanda and Pietro were never mutants, and he is responsible for their incredible powers.
5 The Revelation That Scarlet Witch Was Responsible For Avengers Disassembled
With the deaths of Jack of Hearts, Ant-Man, the Vision, and Hawkeye, the Avengers were left reeling, wondering who or what was unleashing this relentless assault against the team. The Avengers were never short on powerful enemies, but it was revealed that it was actually one of their own that was responsible for their woes.
It is revealed, with the help of Doctor Strange, that it was Scarlet Witch all along. Her powers had grown out of her control, and repeated trauma initiated a complete mental breakdown that led her to wage a personal war against the Avengers.
4 The End Of The Avengers After The Events Of Avengers Disassembled
Just as shocking as the reveal of Wanda’s assault on the Avengers was the end of the team that followed. After Doctor Strange helped the Avengers stop Wanda’s rampage, they found their headquarters destroyed, four of their number deceased, and trust shattered. This prompted Captain America and Iron Man to dissolve the team.
This proved short-lived of course. First, the Young Avengers united to replace the old guard. Then Cap and Iron Man united a team of New Avengers, including the likes of Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Sentry, and Spider-Woman.
3 The Elektra Skrull Reveal In The New Avengers
Years later, the New Avengers, then led by Luke Cage, were on the run from the US government after the events of Civil War, but they continued to try to protect the innocent from the shadows. This led to a clash with the Hand as led by Elektra.
Echo, then a member of the New Avengers, seemingly killed Elektra. However, her corpse soon shape-shifted to reveal that she was a Skrull. Spider-Woman then took the body and left the team without a word. It was soon revealed that Spider-Woman was the Skrull Queen, and the Skrulls had been in the midst of a years-long Secret Invasion intended to take over the Earth.
2 Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, And Yellowjacket Unleashing A Thor Clone
One of the most shocking and abhorrent things done during the Superhuman Civil War was the creation of a cybernetic clone of Thor by Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, and Yellowjacket. They had used the DNA of Thor Odinson to create their own replacement of the then-missing God of Thunder. However, they found themself unable to control this clone, dubbed “Ragnarok,” and it killed Goliath, aka Bill Foster, during a clash between Captain America and Iron Man’s armies.
This clone would later be destroyed by Hercules, and the real Thor would make his displeasure with Iron Man known. However, it would be rebuilt at a later date and unleashed upon Asgard by Norman Osborn and the Dark Avengers. It was later recruited onto the Thunderbolts, which was also redubbed as the Dark Avengers soon after.
1 The Death Of Captain America At The End Of Marvel’s Civil War
Despite it making news headlines in the days before Civil War #7 by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven was released, the death of Captain America at the end of Civil War was still a shocking twist that left readers absolutely stunned. Cap was a tentpole of Marvel Comics and had been a fan-favorite since his return in Avengers #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
He wasn’t even killed during a fight with Iron Man–he surrendered, was arrested, and was killed while being taken in by mysterious assassins–later revealed to be Crossbones, the Red Skull, and a mind-controlled Sharon Carter. Bucky Barnes took up the mantle of Cap after this and even joined up with Luke Cage’s fugitive New Avengers. Of course, Steve Rogers would return later–ironically due in part to the machinations of the Red Skull himself.
