Video games continue to evolve in unbelievable ways as technology accomplishes major advancements, but there’s still endless love for classic gaming properties that have been around for decades, like Nintendo’s Super Mario. Nintendo is extremely fortunate to have many legendary first-party franchises, but few have been able to connect in the same way that the many Mario games continue to do.
The Super Mario franchise is respected for how it pushes the platforming genre to challenging new places, but there’s also an increasingly dense lore for the Mushroom Kingdom that’s been able to unfold through dozens of games. The Mushroom Kingdom might look like an entertaining place to visit, yet there are some very real dangers that plague this seemingly idyllic kingdom.
10 Constant Attacks By Bowser And Other Villains
The Mushroom Kingdom may seem like a fun and playful place to live from an outside perspective, but it’s important to remember that it seems as if attacks of terror from Bowser are a regular occurrence. Mario has had to contend with dozens of various assaults from Bowser as he attempts to capture Princess Peach and rule the Mushroom Kingdom in his own image. This is a highly destabilizing way to live, and it also doesn’t help that a number of other tyrants have also set their sights on the Mushroom Kingdom. Apparently it’s very attractive real estate to dominate.
9 The Possibility Of Getting Possessed By Mario’s Cappy
The Super Mario series has done an incredible job at retaining the core platforming principles that have been present since the very first game, but each title often incorporates a drastically different gameplay mechanic to the mix. Super Mario Odyssey turns Mario’s trademark cap into a powerful and sentient entity known as Cappy. Cappy is able to transport Mario into different enemies’ bodies in order to accomplish certain tasks. It’s a helpful maneuver for Mario, but it’s a frightening reality that at any moment an individual could get Cappy hurled at them and find themselves possessed by a plumber.
8 Mario’s Mega Mushroom Demolishing The Landscape
Mushrooms, in many shapes and sizes, have been a staple of the Super Mario franchise. These items often give Mario a boost in power, but the Mega Mushroom, which was popularized in New Super Mario Bros., transforms Mario into a one-man demolition team.
It’s a very cathartic experience to turn into a giant who can destroy anything in his path, but this is a deeply traumatic experience for everyone else involved. Sometimes the last thing that a Mushroom Kingdom resident sees is a giant Mario just charging through their world and destroying everything that stands in his way.
7 Serious Geographical Changes Are Caused By Flipping Switches
A big advent in the Super Mario series is when a map and a hub world get added to the equation. Mario games have found inspired ways to hide secrets in the game’s maps or use them to trigger changes that allow access to new areas. A major principle that’s present in Super Mario World is a series of hidden giant switches, which will cause major changes in the surrounding environments, after Mario hits them. It must be a very chaotic way to live when the whole world can suddenly shift when someone decides to push some random switch.
6 Contending With The Presence Of Boos And Haunted Houses
There is no shortage of enemies within the Mushroom Kingdom, but they’re often able to peacefully co-exist until Mario storms their homes and puts them under pressure. Goombas and Koopa Troopas aren’t necessarily dangerous when left to their own devices, but the world is also full of the mischievous poltergeists, Boos. The existence of Boos brings the paranormal into Mario’s world, which holds morbid implications. Ghost Houses are also deeply confusing arenas, which some people are never able to escape from, thanks to the risks that these Boos cause. They’ll absolutely take advantage of oblivious travelers.
5 Power-Ups And Items Can Radically Transform The Individual
Mario is a very resilient individual, but he doesn’t officially become Super Mario until he comes in contact with a Mushroom. This sets a precedent for a wide range of power-ups and items that bestow Mario with dozens of differently useful abilities.
These new powers are an advantage for Mario, but on a physical level it must be traumatizing to undergo drastic transformations as Mario becomes these alternate versions of himself. It might be fun to control Bee Mario or Spring Mario, but it looks like his body is in pain during these different forms.
4 Enemies Fill The Land, Sky, And Sea
The Mushroom Kingdom does an excellent job when it comes to the variety of its different worlds and levels. Mario is used to exploration on land, but there are plenty of levels that put him underwater or keep him stuck up in the air. It’s a little discouraging to realize that there are always enemies and obstacles around Mario, regardless of what terrain he tackles. Less equipped individuals might want to avoid attacks on land, but even if they try to travel through air or water, they’re still going to face threats. There’s no reprieve from danger.
3 The Use Of Yoshis As Expendable Tools
Super Mario World makes Yoshi an essential part of Mario’s adventures and the use of this dinosaur often allows Mario to accomplish tasks or explore regions that would otherwise be impossible. There’s a playful relationship between Mario and Yoshi, but a dark codependency is present the more that their bond is analyzed. Yoshis are treated as completely dispensable to Mario and merely a means to an end. Mario strikes Yoshi to make him cooperate and he’ll often discard him mid-air to reach greater heights. Any Yoshi should be seriously worried about their expiration date.
2 Evil Doppelgangers Can Arrive
Mario and the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom have enough to worry about with Bowser and Bowser Jr. that they shouldn’t also have to have doubt over whether they can trust Mario, their ultimate hero. Some of Bowser’s schemes, like the stunt pulled in Super Mario Sunshine, involve Shadow Mario or other evil duplicates that tarnish Mario’s reputation. Shadow Mario originates on Delfino Island, but he’s made returns, and it adds an extra level of deception to everything. Mushroom Kingdom civilians shouldn’t have to worry that their hero is an imposter.
1 Accidentally Getting Whisked Away To The Minus World
A classic glitch from the original Super Mario Bros. that’s become quite famous is the procedure to “trick” the game into sending Mario to the bizarre Minus World. This is an entertaining bug that can give players an extra challenge and different visuals, but it’s a terrifying concept to imagine in a literal sense. The prospect of Mario somehow getting teleported to a dark, reverse world of reality that he can’t escape from is a true nightmare. It’s reasonable to worry that occasional members of the Mushroom Kingdom accidentally disappear through this practice.
