Marc Spector’s Worst Enemy Is Hiding In Plain Sight

Moon Knight introduces the idea that the hero can’t trust himself. In doing so, the show may also tease how his greatest enemy hides in plain sight.

The new Moon Knight series brings the Marvel Universe’s most unique hero to life. Part of what makes the hero so interesting is how, in many instances, his worst enemy can often be viewed as himself. This is because Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac) suffers from Dissociative Personality Disorder. Among these personalities are Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. For now, the trailer has only revealed two of these personalities. But as Steven, there are signs in the trailer that show he has to protect him from himself and whatever dangerous acts he may commit.

At the beginning of the new Moon Knight trailer, Steven Grant is shown sealing up his apartment and placing tape on the crack. He also ties himself to his bed and calls a helpline due to a sleeping disorder where he can’t rest or differentiate dreams and reality. In one instance, he even wakes up startled and runs out of bed, forgetting he tied himself to the frame. It’s a brief moment that sets up just how scared Steven is of an entity that audiences and maybe even himself don’t fully understand.

The trailer gives viewers multiple possibilities as to why Steven is scared and who or what the unknown entity is that takes control. The more obvious example is Marc Spector, the main personality that came before all the others. It’s likely that at night, he takes over, unties himself and dons the Moon Knight outfit to go out and fight whatever forces call on the fist of Khonshu. If true, Steven is in luck as Marc is one of the more benevolent personalities, being that he also strives for peace of mind in the comics.

A more dangerous reason Steven is tying himself up is that the identity that takes over and becomes Moon Knight is Jake Lockley. In the comics, Lockley is a cab driver with an exceedingly violent personality. However, when he becomes Moon Knight, his actions are far more brutal and often tied to the character’s most brutal acts. However, if it turns out that Steven’s worst enemy isn’t himself, that means it’s Khonshu.

Khonshu is the Egyptian moon God who gave Marc his powers and saved him from dying in the comics. But when Marc doesn’t go out to fight injustice, Khonshu gets impatient and pushy, leading to scenes where he is shown terrorizing Steven while he is in an elevator. Although Khonshu grants Moon Knight his powers and outfit, he’s also far from a hero. As a result, it’s possible that he’s at odds with Marc and terrorizes him in his sleep to get what he wants.

When Marc and his personalities aren’t in sync, chaos follows. As Steven learns, with so many names vying for the spotlight in his mind, things can often get confusing. It’s likely this is because Marc went into hiding, leaving Steven to pick up the pieces. But whatever the explanation, it’s clear that without a leader, his personalities, and Khonshu, wreak havoc on Marc’s mind. As a result, without cooperating for the greater good, they all sabotage one another, becoming their own worst enemies.

See how Marc Spector’s multiple personalities affect the hero when Moon Knight premieres on Disney+ on March 30.
