Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill doesn’t rule out the idea of adding Superman’s iconic red trunks if he has the opportunity to suit up again.
Although the Superman suit worn by Henry Cavill doesn’t have the character’s iconic red trunks on the outside, the Man of Steel actor isn’t opposed to eventually wearing them.
Cavill appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote Season 2 of The Witcher and was asked by Colbert how he felt about the fact that his Superman suit doesn’t have the “big red underwear.” Cavill replied by first explaining the origin of the red trunks. “[The trunks were] a bit of a hangover from strongmen in the ’20s,” he said. “I thought it had potential to work.”
Cavill continued, “I really loved my suit. I thought it was pretty cool. However, if it were to happen again, I would definitely be open to the idea of adding the trunks in some way, shape or form.” Colbert suggested a modern take on the red underwear in the form of a “tasteful” red thong and Cavill entertained the idea in good humor, suggesting, “only in the back.”
Cavill first appeared as Clark Kent/Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, subsequently reprising the role in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League and 2012’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. There are currently no announced plans for Cavill to return to the role, though Cavill has said that he does “still have the outfit. Just in case. Ready and waiting for the phone calls.”
Man of Steel and Batman v Superman writer David S. Goyer, spoke about if there was still a story to tell for Cavill’s Superman saying, “I think so.” There are rumors of a direct sequel to Man of Steel, and Goyer addressed this also. “I’m not involved in it right now,” he said. “I’ve heard the same rumors you’ve heard, but I’m not plugged into it.”
Someone who agrees that there is still mileage in Cavill’s take on the Last Son of Krypton is Cavill himself. “There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as a Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity,” he said. Cavill specifically pointed to the fallout from Superman killing Zod as something he would like to explore, saying, “There’s an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside.”
