Lynda Carter Counters JK Rowling’s Recent Transphobic Comments

[ad_1]

Wonder Woman actor Lynda Carter issues a statement in support of the trans community following J.K. Rowling’s latest transphobic comments.

Wonder Woman‘s Lynda Carter offered a counter-argument to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s most recent transphobic comments.

Carter shared her thoughts following the latest in a trail of anti-trans rhetoric from Rowling on Twitter. “You don’t have to be trans to understand the importance of respecting trans people and affirming their identities,” Carter said. “Life is just too short. I can’t imagine how it makes any sense to use one’s fame and resources to put others down.”

Rowling has been clear about her anti-trans stance for some years, even penning an essay in 2020 to defend previous transphobic comments she made on social media. While many literary figures and actors have come to Rowling’s defense since she first faced backlash for those comments, Carter is far from the first person to denounce Rowling’s viewpoint.

Many actors from within the Harry Potter franchise responded in support of the trans community since 2020, including Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Katie Leung (Cho Chang), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) and Miriam Margolyes (Professor Sprout).

“Transgender women are women,” Radcliffe said in a 2020 statement. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films, recently elaborated on why he spoke out against Rowling’s politics in the first place. “I think to stay silent would have spoke,” Grint said. “Sometimes silence is even louder. I felt like I had to because I think it was important to. I mean, I don’t want to talk about all that… Generally, I’m not an authority on the subject… Just out of kindness, and just respecting people. I think it’s a valuable group that I think needs standing up for.”

Rowling wrote all the books in the Harry Potter franchise, with the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone, published in 1997. Harry Potter will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a reunion special on HBO Max, titled Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The special will see the return of Radcliffe, Grint, Emma Watson and other cast and crew members from the eight Harry Potter films, but Rowling will not be in attendance. Whether this has anything to do with her comments is unclear.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts premieres on HBO Max Jan. 1, 2022.
