The latest issue of Power Rangers reveals that although Lord Drakkon is a force of evil he may still retain some of the goodness of Tommy Oliver.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #8 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Gilbey Ibarra, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.
Life has never been easy for the Power Rangers, but things have rarely been worse than they are right now, especially for the Omega Rangers. Not only have they been branded as intergalactic outlaws for having kidnapped Lord Drakkon from Zordon’s custody, but they’ve also led a recent prison break, making grave enemies out of the S.P.D. in the process. All of this has given good reason to believe that Drakkon’s influence has something to do with the Omega Rangers crossing lines they never thought they would. However, a recent conversation indicates that the Rangers may have left their influence on the former tyrant, as Drakkon has just revealed that he still has a heart beneath his cruel and callous demeanor.
On board the Spectrum II, as the others deal with the current refugee crisis, Drakkon and Xi banter back and forth about the impending destruction of the Hartunian Empire. Xi is surprised by Drakkon’s apparent glee in watching the Hartunians’ reign come to an end, considering his own “propensity for subjugation.” As Lord Drakkon explains it, he doesn’t hate the Hartunians for having built an empire on the backs of those they had invaded, but rather for the way in which they did so. As far as he is concerned the Hartunians have never actually conquered anything, instead choosing to scavenge the resources of civilizations that never stood a chance against such an overwhelmingly sophisticated army. For Drakkon, there is neither challenge nor honor in invading a world still in its infancy, and for that the Hartunians have never earned his respect.
No matter how awful the atrocities committed by Drakkon in the past, it is hard to think of one that was carried out against an unwitting or otherwise incapable foe. As a despot and conqueror, Drakkon always took great pride in the subjugation of his enemies. This doesn’t excuse his actions, but it does illuminate a particularly intriguing aspect of his character. So does the fact that within mere moments he is able to go from joking about eating popcorn while watching a planetary genocide play out to earnestly working to help refugees from that world.
No matter how much Drakkon would like to think he is removed from any heroic version of Tommy Oliver across the multiverse, there is at least some of that same person still inside of him. Glimpses of that goodness have been brought out bit by bit during his time with the Omega Rangers, although if the Rangers recent actions are any indication he could be rubbing off on them as well.
No matter what might be going on in the back of Drakkon’s mind, the fact that he was a far different kind of tyrant than the Hartunian Emperor is as clear as day. Drakkon may have created an entire world in his own image after tearing apart reality, but he certainly never took pride in decimating the lives of beings who never had a fighting chance.
Thanks to Drakkon’s help, the Hartunian Empire actually has an opportunity to not only rebuild itself, but to make something better than ever before for its people. Maybe this time around it won’t even be an empire, although if that’s the case, they should probably avoid any of Drakkon’s advice when it comes to how to run things.
