Loki’s season finale will have massive ramifications, like creating an even bigger event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than Infinity War.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Loki, “For All Time. Always.,” streaming now on Disney+.
The season finale of Loki, “For All Time. Always.” delivered some major revelations about the Marvel Cinematic Universe that set up Season 2 of Loki as well as the next big MCU conflict. The episode sees Loki and Sylvie come face to face with He Who Remains, the man behind the Time Variance Authority and the individual who set the pair on their respective paths. He gives them two choices: take over and run the TVA, preserving the timeline, or kill him and unleash an infinite number of his variants, causing another multiversal war. Sylvie kills the man behind everything, despite Loki pleading with her to think of the repercussions.
In doing so, Sylvie essentially started another Infinity War, seeing as creating the multiverse is an event that will change the entire MCU for years to come. He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, reveals that the first Multiversal War was fought between him and countless other variants of himself after they discovered the existence of other universes stacked on top of each other. After a period of peace, the different variants of Kang fought until one destroyed the other universes and his variants by harnessing the power of Alioth, the monster that consumes everything in the Void. He created the TVA to keep branches from forming and other versions of himself from existing.
To their surprise, He Who Remains wants to hand control over to both Sylvie and Loki and reveals that he has been guiding and influencing their journey from the very beginning. He gives them a choice, but seems to be hoping they’ll take his place when he promises that his variants are much worse than him. With both options having major drawbacks, Loki pleads with Sylvie to think about what they should do, but Sylvie can’t trust anyone, and Loki can’t be trusted. After an emotional fight between the two, Kang is killed and warns Sylvie of the coming terror. The second multiversal war is seemingly the next big event in the MCU after Infinity War, and like the multiverse itself, the possibilities for what comes next are infinite.
The next multiversal war could end up leading to a Secret Wars-like event, where the multiverse is being destroyed, leading to multiple realities converging into one after the conflict is over. The head of a Living Tribunal statue, the all-powerful protector of the multiverse, did appear in the Void, so there are hints at where this could be going, but it’s still too early to tell. Kang could end up being the Thanos-like threat that looms over the next phase of the MCU, or he could be standing in the way of something even more threatening.
Doctor Strange In Multiverse of Madness will presumably deal directly with the branching multiverse, and with reports that Tom Hiddleston is set to appear in the film, Loki now ties even more directly into the film. Doctor Strange already explored alternate dimensions and realities, and Stephen Strange is the perfect character to interact with the multiverse and deal with the fallout of Loki. Since countless Kang variants are coming, he could appear as the Doctor Strange 2‘s big bad. Additionally, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has already confirmed that Johnathan Majors will appear as Kang and be the movie’s main villain. Spider-Man: No Way Home will also be confronting the multiverse head-on with characters from non-MCU Marvel movies confirmed to be returning and the continued rumors of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appearing as their respective versions of Spider-Man.
The MCU is now multiversal, and Loki is the beginning of what looks like an exciting future. The first three phases of the MCU led to the Infinity Saga, and now Phase Four is primed to explore the multiverse and all the threats and adventures it will bring. The prospect of a multiversal war might just be big and bold enough to one-up the Infinity Saga.
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Eugene Cordero. The Season 1 finale is available now on Disney+.
