Loki: How a Plot Detail Was Inspired by Calvin and Hobbes

Loki writer Michael Waldron shares a new piece of trivia from the Disney+ series, revealing the Calvin and Hobbes strip that inspired Kablooie Gum.

Loki writer Michael Waldron explained that the inspiration behind Kablooie gum came from a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.

“A little morsel for the Loki IMDB trivia section: Kablooie was a nod to my favorite writer, Bill Watterson,” said Waldron on Twitter. “Bill, if you’re out there, you’re not reading this because there’s no chance you have Twitter.” The strip in question shows Calvin requesting a bedtime story titled, “Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie.”

Watterson wrote and drew the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip throughout its ten-year run, which was first published on Nov. 18, 1985 and concluding on Dec. 31, 1995. The series followed the adventures of a mischievous young boy named Calvin and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes. The popular comic strip was later collected into several books, including Something Under the Bed Is Drooling, Weirdos from Another Planet! and The Revenge of the Baby-Sat.

The pack of Kablooie Gum first appeared in the Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series Loki in Episode 1, “Glorious Purpose,” after Owen Wilson’s Mobius discovered it in 16th-century France, a clue that inevitably led him to the Lady Loki variant, aka. Sylvie, who was hiding in a Roxxcart during a catastrophic storm in the year 2050. This later led to the discovery that the variant was hiding in various apocalyptic events across the timeline.

Created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Sasha Lane as Hunter C-20 and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, with Richard E. Grant and Jack Veal. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney+.
