Loki Director Says Sylvie’s Finale [SPOILER] Was Genuine

Loki Season 1 director Kate Herron says that Sylvie’s expression of her feelings for Loki were genuine, despite her betrayal in the final episode.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 6, “For All Time. Always.,” streaming now on Disney+.

Kate Herron, who directed Season 1 of Loki, explained in a new interview why she believes Sylvie’s betrayal of Loki in the finale didn’t necessarily mean that her feelings for him weren’t genuine. “Sylvie is sort of where our Loki was in Thor,” Herron told The Hollywood Reporter. “She’s driven by revenge, pain, and anger, and that’s what he’s saying to her.”

Herron further divulged that in their final moments together, Loki tried to connect with Sylvie and explain that he understands where she’s at in her journey. “He’s like, ‘I’ve been where you are, and I just want you to be OK. You’re not going to get what you want,'” Herron explained.

Unfortunately for Loki, Sylvie hasn’t reached that part on her journey of self-healing. “So she’s not going to see it that way,” the director said. “So there was a sense that she was turning to get the TemPad, but I don’t think it meant the kiss wasn’t genuine. In my head, it was always a horrible goodbye, really, but the feelings were real.”

While Herron both produced and directed every episode of Loki’s first season, she announced following the Season 1 finale that she won’t be returning for Season 2. “I always planned to be just on for this and, to be honest, Season 2 wasn’t in the — that’s something that just came out and I’m so excited,” she said at the time. “I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season, but I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all. I’m working on some other stuff yet to be announced.”

While it’s unclear at this time what Herron’s next project will be, it’s possible she could be joining a project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a similar vein, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator and head writer Malcolm Spellman will be writing Captain America 4 alongside series writer Dalan Musson, while Loki head writer Michael Waldron previously left the Tom Hiddleston-led series early on in order to pen the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — which is scheduled for release in March 2022.
