Just under a year since its initial release, Little Nightmares II’s twisted ending still shocks fans with its crushing, emotional blow.
The agonizing events of Little Nightmares II‘s end left fans to grieve Mono’s inescapable fate. Just under a year on from the game’s initial release, the theories surrounding Mono’s cruel destiny only serve to twist the knife that Six left in fans’ hearts further. While Tarsier Studios and Bandai Namco Entertainment are yet to make a statement on the status of the Little Nightmares series, the success of Little Nightmares II has fans hopeful for another installment.
Set in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world fans know and love, Little Nightmares II introduced players to a new protagonist, Mono. Courageous and kind-hearted, the tiny hero quickly won the hearts of fans with his paper-bag mask and willfulness to help others. Unfortunately, this only made it much more heartbreaking to watch Six, the previous protagonist of the first game, betray him at the very end. Fans are eager to see whether Mono can break free of his time-loop and curious to know how the infamous raincoat girl’s story will progress.
Mono’s Inescapable Fate
Little Nightmares II‘s ending was a hot topic shortly after the game’s release and remains impactful a year later. Watching in horror as Six drops Mono to his doom, leaving him to his inescapable fate of becoming the Thin Man was an incredibly dark twist. This revelation is made worse when players realize that Mono is resigned to his destiny of becoming the Thin Man because of his own kindness.
For most of the game, the Thin Man is just another antagonist to escape from, though after watching Mono warp into the slender figure, it becomes clear that both young and old Mono are stuck in an endless cycle. Based on the story, it’s theorized that adult Mono, aka the Thin Man, attempts to break the cycle by taking Six. He’s trying his best to break the cycle of pain, only to be bested by his younger self each time.
The Secret (True) Ending & Six’s Hunger
The secret finale, otherwise known as the true ending, rewards players who collect all 18 “Glitching Remains” throughout the game. Unlike the typical finish, the true ending shows Six falling out of a TV screen. Now alone in a dark room, Six is faced with a glitched shadow of herself; Shadow Six. Six’s attention to her dark doppelganger is then interrupted as she suddenly becomes overwhelmed by all-too-familiar hunger pangs.
The secret ending confirms that Little Nightmares II is a prequel to the first game. It’s also speculated that Six stole some of Mono’s power, which wouldn’t be the first time players have witnessed Six stealing power from others. Despite managing to escape, the void left behind by Shadow Six causes an insatiable appetite that no amount of food or power seems to dull.
What’s Next for Six and Mono?
The Little Nightmares universe is full of dark riddles and unanswered questions. A game revolving around Mono’s origin, his power and why he’s so insistent on saving others could be interesting. Alternatively, the developers could reveal the ultimate fate of Six, last seen exiting The Maw after consuming the essence of its inhabitants. Of course, Tarsier Studios could choose to leave those mysteries in the dark.
Ultimately, though, it’s unlikely that this will be the last fans see of Little Nightmares. There are just so many avenues to explore, meaning the possibilities for another sinister story are high. Whether the developers choose to expand on existing chapters or introduce us to the perspective of a new character, the endings of both the Little Nightmares games suggest that Tarsier Studios aren’t finished with the story of this gritty universe just yet.
