Leonardo Is Destined to Train Two Archie Comics Era Future Turtles

[ad_1]

Two classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters from the Archie Comics futures seem set to make their way to the Turtles’ present.

WARNING: The following contains minor spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117, by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, Ronda Pattison and Shawn Lee, on sale now.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles recently changed the course of history in its making to save themselves from one of their darkest futures. In the process, they were given a glimpse of what might be their brightest future yet. In a flash-forward from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117, the Turtles saw their future selves standing alongside several prospective members of the Splinter Clan. While it’s not entirely clear who all of these characters are, two have already been referred to by name, and it seems like the Archie Comics-era Turtles character Bob and Carmen have established themselves as parts of the Turtles future.

While being published by Archie Comics in the ’90s, the Turtles had more than a few time-skipping adventures. The most shocking of these saw the title of the book itself changed for five issues beginning with 1994’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #62 by Dean Clarrain, Chris Allan, Jon D’Agostino and Barry Grossman. In the year 2094, the Turtles lived to see a future where nearly the entire globe has become submerged by rising seas. Thankfully, the Turtles had managed to thrive in this seemingly bleak new world. They upgraded with ridiculous new armor as the Cyber Samurai Mutant Ninja Turtles.

While his brothers have taken on other work, Leonardo has kept the Splinter Clan alive and well with the help of his “children.” Alongside Leonardo are April O’Neil’s great-great granddaughter Nobuko, her fellow humans Miles and Carmen, and the mandrill mutant ninja named Bob. Leo’s students were just as dedicated to their adoptive father as he was to them. When Michelangelo was gravely injured by the cybernetically enhanced mutant Verminator-X, Leo’s clan was left to guard him during his recovery while the others suited up to strike back.

When the Turtles led the charge on their enemies, they found themselves embroiled in one of their most wild adventures yet. After traveling back to Berlin to fight the Axis powers during World War II, the heroes returned to their own time only to find it overrun by the hordes of zombies left literally mindless by the evil alien Crainiac. The new villain had come to Earth seeking human brains as a high-priced commodity, and instead, set off a convoluted chain reaction that very nearly culminated in the world being annihilated by a passing comet.

Bob and Carmen weren’t able to stave off Crainiac’s assault, they proved themselves more than capable of cutting down waves of zombies alongside Raphael and Michelangelo while the other two Turtles dealt with the source of the calamity. Even if they haven’t been seen since, Bob, Carmen, Miles, and Nobuko were all among the strongest allies that the Archie Comics era Splinter Clan had. Now that two of them are on their way to meet the Turtles of the present, the chance for their backstories to be fleshed out more completely has finally arrived.

During Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #116, the adult Lita from the future of the current timeline told Leonardo that he needed to find and train both Bob and Carmen, who she promised would be important in the days to come. When Lita returned to her own future, she glimpsed a vision of the future where mandril mutant stood next to a curly-haired brunette. Assuming this is them, Leonardo seems set to bring both of them into the fold soon. The only question left is where they will be coming from, and if they are in any way connected to their previous incarnations.

The Splinter Clan’s other time-traveling ally, Renet, has full knowledge of their previous lives as part of Malibu and Archie Comics respectively, so there is the possibility that Bob and Carmen will be coming from the future they were last seen in as well. If this is the case, they could prove to be even more important than Lita let on.
