When it comes to cliffhangers and shocking plot twists, The Legend of Korra delivers. While it still has its shortcomings when compared to its predecessor, Avatar: The Last Airbender, the fact that each season of Korra introduced a new villain meant that each season would be fundamentally different from the last, and that was a very welcome concept.
While following the new team Avatar on their journey, there were times when things happened that were completely unexpected in either a good or bad way, and these plot twists changed the dynamic of the story considerably. In this show full of surprises, which plot twist was the most shocking?
10 Hiroshi’s Membership With The Equalists Was A Sad Revelation
The Equalists were seen as an illegal organization given the fact that they threatened the peace of Republic City. When Amon declared war on all benders, fans were eager to see how the ensuing battles would play out. What no one was ready for was the revelation that Asami’s father, Hiroshi Sato, was a member of the Equalists – their tech expert who manufactured weapons. This revelation was sad as it meant that Asami would have to choose between helping her father or her friends. She ultimately chose to stay with Korra.
9 Unalaq Being An Evil Mastermind Was Not What Viewers Expected From The Avatar’s Uncle
During his introduction, it was clear that Unalaq and Korra’s father had issues. They both argued over who was to tutor Korra, and Korra seemed to like the idea of learning from her uncle. Viewers saw this as just a little brotherly rivalry and expected Tonrak and Unalaq to work it out somewhere along the away. It was later revealed that Unalaq was downright evil and wanted nothing good for Korra or the world at large. This was rather sad after viewers grew to like Unalaq during the first few episodes of Book 2.
8 Zaheer Flying Away With Korra Was A Plot Twist No One Saw Coming
During a battle at Lahima’s Peak, Zaheer and Pli faced off against Korra, Tonrak and Zaofu’s security forces. This entire encounter was filled with plot twists as it turned out the heroes were tricked with fake airbenders. To make things worse, it seemed Zaheer killed Tonrak, and Suyin killed Pli.
If viewers hadn’t had enough, just when everyone was so sure they would get Zaheer, he recited a poem from Guru Lahima, jumped off the cliff, and flew away with the Avatar in tow. Lin, Suyin, and viewers alike were left in shock and disbelief.
7 Tarrlok Being A Bloodbender Was Rather Unexpected
Tarrlok revealed his true nature to Korra as being malicious and dubious. When Tarrlok had Korra’s friends arrested in order to force Korra to comply, Korra confronted him in his office where their argument quickly escalated into a fierce battle. Korra successfully backed Tarrlok into a corner, and in a last effort to save himself, Tarrlok revealed that he was a bloodbender. What’s more, it wasn’t even a full moon, so how he did it was a mystery until later on in the show.
6 Bumi’s Sudden Ability To Airbend Ushered In The New Season Of Plot Twists
While Bumi was chasing his spirit friend Bumju, he wound up teetering on a tree branch that hung over a cliff. As expected, the branch broke, but just as Bumi was about to hit the ground, he used airbending to prevent himself from getting hurt. This was an interesting revelation that only became more interesting when reports of people who started airbending out of nowhere came flooding in.
5 Bolin’s Ability To Lavabend Came As A Shock To Bolin As Well As The Viewers
Bolin, Asami, Mako, and Tenzin were desperately trying to escape an Air Temple that was being consumed by lava courtesy of Ghazan. Everyone expected that they would somehow outrun the lava eventually, but when they hit a dead end with the lava catching up quickly, no one expected what happened next: Bolin saved their lives by lavabending. Everyone including Bolin was shocked and excited at this newfound ability.
4 Lin Beifong Losing Her Bending Was A Sad Plot Twist Indeed
The Equalists attacked Republic City and chaos ensued everywhere. Amidst the chaos, there were attempts to capture Tenzin and his family. Thanks to Team Avatar and Ling Beifong, these attempts were thwarted. During their escape from Air Temple Island, Tenzin and his family, along with Lin Beifong, were chased by Equalist airships. Lin attacked them to give her friends time to escape, but though she fought well, she was captured and Amon robbed her of her bending.
3 Amon’s Being A Waterbender & Bloodbender Was A Jaw Dropping Revelation
Amon, the villain of Book 1, was a masked mystery that aimed to “equalize” Republic City. He was able to take away a person’s bending and was feared throughout the city. Viewers seemed to have come to terms with the fact that he had this ability for whatever reason and were just anticipating his defeat.
During a mission to take down Amon, Korra and Mako found Tarrlok, whom Amon had captured, locked up in the Air Temple. What came next was a shocking revelation. Amon was not only Tarrlok’s brother, but a waterbender and bloodbender – and it was his bloodbending that made him able take away others’ bending. Fans were just as shocked as Korra and Mako.
2 Toph Being Alive & Kicking Left Fans Too Excited For Words
Fans seemed to have come to terms with the fact that most of their favorite characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender had already passed. During Korra’s journey to heal herself after her previous encounter with the Red Lotus, she was led by a spirit into a swamp where she battled an image of herself that had been haunting her.
When she woke up, she found an old lady cooking. The lady stated that she recognized Korra as the Avatar and said that she was good friends with Korra’s predecessor. When she turned around, she was immediately recognizable as Toph herself, still alive after all these years.
1 Unalaq’s Destruction Of Raava Was Heartbreaking
This was one of Korra’s biggest failures as the Avatar. Not only did she lose to Unalaq, Raava the Avatar Spirit was ripped right out of Korra and partially destroyed. Viewers watched in horror and disbelief as Unalaq unleashed strike after strike against the defenseless spirit, and with each strike the link to one or more previous Avatars was destroyed. While Korra was able to fuse with the spirit again, her connection to her past lives was permanently severed.
