Cut dialogue from The Last of Us Part II suggests that Ellie’s iconic moth tattoo may have been inspired by her favorite comic book character.
A fan of The Last of Us Part II seemingly discovered an in-universe explanation behind Ellie’s moth tattoo.
A sequence of cut dialogue, unearthed by Reddit user u/taegukie, suggests that Ellie’s tattoo, as seen on her right arm, is inspired by Savage Starlight, an in-world comic book. During the game’s Finding Strings level, Joel brings up Ellie’s favorite comic book in an attempt to connect with her. He states that the hologram map used by Dr. Daniela Star is in the shape of a moth, going on to ask Ellie if that inspired her moth design. Ellie responds by merely saying, “Ugh… Maybe? Judgy.”
The discovery of the dialogue was more challenging than expected. u/taegukie says that “Joel’s lines weren’t in a logical order and a lot of Ellie’s lines seem to be missing, since all I could find were these short replies.” u/taeguki elaborates by saying that Ellie’s brief responses may also simply be due to her crumbling relationship with Joel.
While the connection to Savage Starlight may have once served as an in-universe inspiration behind the design, Neil Druckmann, creative director and lead-co-writer of The Last of Us Part II, said that the moth represents “Ellie’s connection to Joel even once he’s gone.” The idea for the tattoo was born out of a concept artist suggesting that the guitar Joel gives Ellie should bear the same moth design, deepening the connection between the two characters.
While the game is over a year old, the community of The Last of Us Part II is still dedicated to discovering the game’s secrets. Recently, it was found that secondary protagonist Abby is able to kill Tommy, a crucial character to the story, rendering the game unplayable and forcing a level restart. Fans have also discovered that the game prevents players from damaging any in-game Sony hardware, including a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
If you want to see Ellie’s elaborate moth tattoo yourself, you can check out The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4. The game is also available on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility and even supports 60FPS thanks to a recent performance patch for Sony’s latest console.
