WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Cable #11 by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto & VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.
During the Krakoan era, Professor X and Magneto have been the primary leaders of mutantkind. Putting aside their differences, these longtime friends and former enemies have spearheaded a new nation for mutants…and have recently been given the perfect nickname for their current partnership.
This oddly fitting nickname comes in Cable #11, when Hope Summers is talking to the rest of the Five. Hope is trying to convince the rest of the group to help her resurrect the older Cable, despite the existence of Kid Cable. Considering the rule on Krakoa that forbids the resurrection of clones and doppelgangers, this is an inherently divisive idea.
Some members of the Five are with Hope, while others are unsure. The main concern comes from Elixir, who thinks that they would probably risk the fury of one of the “helmet bros.” Clearly, this is referring to Professor X and Magneto, since they both almost constantly wear helmets. To everyone’s surprise, Professor X appears, and he seems okay with this nickname.
In fact, Xavier tells the Five that the “helmet bros” have been brought up to speed on resurrecting old Cable. It’s interesting that Professor X isn’t just okay with resurrecting Cable, but he’s also fine with the nickname he’s been given. In this way, Xavier can be surprisingly open to some of his students’ more humorous nicknames.
The “helmet bros” nickname might seem like a throwaway line, referring to the similar appearance of Professor X and Magneto. Yet this nickname also strikes at the current partnership between these mutant leaders. For years, Xavier and Magneto were ideological opposites, standing against each other. Now, however, they’re on the same side, unified in their vision to advance mutantkind.
It says a lot, not just that they’re both wearing helmets, but that both leaders share the same goals now. While there are many leaders on Krakoa, Professor X and Magneto are the two main figureheads of the nation. Krakoa would never work without both Professor X and Magneto onboard. Xavier and Magneto are unified on nearly every decision now, a drastic shift from years of conflict.
Alongside Moira X, Xavier and Magneto helped build Krakoa, showing how the mutant nation is a product of their shared vision. This is probably why Professor X and Magneto sit at the autumn table of the Quiet Council, since they’re two of the most important mutant leaders in history. As “helmet bros,” Professor X and Magneto are arguably the most prominent mutants on Krakoa.
This nickname also says something about the Five in general. This handful of mutants have been given an important role on Krakoa, charged with the resurrection of dead mutants. The resurrection protocols are vital to Krakoa, essentially ensuring a form of immortality for the mutants. Moreover, these resurrection protocols show how powerful the members of the Five are, especially when working together.
Even so, the Five are still quite young, as evidenced by their humorous nickname for Professor X and Magneto. The “helmet bros” nickname is also indicative of a more rebellious view of authority. In the context of the scene, there is a spirited debate, in which Hope Summers wishes to openly defy the Quiet Council to resurrect the man she sees as a surrogate father.
Tempus also seems onboard with the idea, questioning what the Quiet Council is truly going to do if they resurrect Cable. Both of these mutants display a sort of teenage rebellion, which embodies the youthful spirit of the “helmet bros” nickname. Looking skeptically at Xavier and Magneto’s power, the Five truly show the defiant nature of their age.
Even mutants like Elixir, who are a little more hesitant to defy the council, use nicknames like “helmet bros.” This nickname shows that, even if some of the Five are afraid of the Quiet Council, they’re still willing to make lighthearted jokes about Professor X and Magneto behind their backs. At the end of the day, the Five are still quite young, with a sense of humor and a rebellious attitude to match.
