Promo art for Marvel’s Knights of X by Tini Howard and Bob Quinn teases a world of adventure while hinting towards an iconic X-Men story.
The X-Men are fighting for their lives in promotional art for Knights of X.
In April 2022, writer Tini Howard and artist Bob Quinn present Knights of X. The series spins out of the pages of Excalibur, following Betsy Braddock as Captain Britain as she tries to save Otherworld from itself. A new teaser for the title by artist Rod Reis shows Betsy, Rachel Grey and Gambit hiding from a Fury cyborg, using a large wall for cover. On the wall, images of Bei the Blood Moon, Rictor, Shatterstar, Shogo and Meggan Braddock can be seen, accompanied by the text “BANISHED.” The layout of the teaser is a clear homage to John Byrne and Terry Austin’s iconic cover to X-Men #141, the first chapter of “Days of Future Past.” Given the dire circumstances of that storyline, surviving Knights of X might be Captain Britain’s toughest task to date.
Earlier this week, Howard and artist Marcus To concluded their run on Excalibur, which launched in the wake of Jonathan Hickman’s acclaimed House of X/Powers of X miniseries. It focused on Betsy taking on the mantle of Captain Britain to serve as the bridge between the United Kingdom, Krakoa and Otherworld, a magical realm that houses the Starlight Citadel and the Captain Britain Corps. Betsy recruited various members of the X-Men to assist her in this task, but enemy forces often tore the team apart throughout the series. After they reunited in the final issue of Excalibur, the team’s headquarters was destroyed by the British government’s command, leaving Betsy stranded in Otherworld with seemingly no way home.
Otherworld’s prominence has risen in recent years, partly due to Excalibur and the crossover event X of Swords, which saw the X-Men’s champions fight against the warriors of Arakko, the counterpart to Krakoa. In the aftermath of X of Swords, some of Otherworld’s citizens united against mutants, whom they labeled as “Witchbreeds.” This tension led the rebels to overthrow Opal Luna Saturnye, the realm’s ruler, installing a new regime of intolerance and hate. This struggle seems to be at the forefront of Knights of X, as the teaser’s text reads, “A world of magic and adventure awaits… unless you’re a mutant.”
Alongside Knights of X, Marvel will be ushering in a new era for the X-Men with “Destiny of X.” This status quo comes in the wake of Inferno and X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine, establishing jumping-on points for various titles, such as X-Force and Marauders. In total, there will be nine books included in the line-up, beginning with Immortal X-Men by Kieron Gillen and Lucas Werneck on March 30.
