Kirby’s Copy ability has made them a highlight of Smash Bros, but there’s one odd quirk when copying Sora: they can’t use an actual Keyblade.
One of the best parts of receiving new DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is seeing how Kirby will interpret the new fighter’s abilities. Using their copy ability, Kirby not only can copy a power from every character in Ultimate‘s roster, but they also take on their appearance. This power is a nod to Kirby’s franchise, where they do the same to their enemies. Kirby’s latest cosplay is Sora from Kingdom Hearts, but even Kirby’s powerful copy ability can’t duplicate Sora’s Keyblade.
After copying Sora, Kirby receives a stylish spikey wig and can cast Sora’s Firaga, Thundaga and Blizzaga spells to shoot fireballs. summon lightning and perform an ice attack, all the while calling out the names of the spells in a cute, high-pitched voice. Sora performs these spells by using the power of his Keyblade, but Kirby doesn’t have access to a Keyblade. Instead, Kirby creates an imitation blade out of what seems to be light. In other copied forms, Kirby typically receives a replica of their target’s weapon, such as Fox’s blaster or Joker’s gun, but according to the canon of Kingdom Hearts, Kirby isn’t able to wield a Keyblade because they are not a chosen wielder.
According to Kingdom Hearts lore, only a chosen Keyblade wielder can wield the weapon. The power of the Keyblade is linked to their wielder, and they will only perform for someone who is their wielder or has close ties to their wielder. Furthermore, even if Kirby took Sora’s Keyblade by force, the Keyblade would always return to its chosen wielder, who in this case is Sora.
Who wields a Keyblade is up to the Keyblade itself, similar to how a wand chooses its wizard in Harry Potter. An exception to the rule, a Keyblade can also be passed down from a master-level Keyblade wielder to an inheritor of their choice, granted the Keyblade accepts them as someone who is worthy. The most prevalent qualification for being a Keyblade wielder is to have a strong heart. Even though Kirby’s heart is pure, that doesn’t necessarily indicate their heart is strong, as villains with strong, evil hearts can wield Keyblades of their own. That said, it isn’t impossible for Kirby to ever wield a Keyblade, but they haven’t inherited nor been chosen by a Keyblade, so it would not make sense in this context for him to do so. Despite this, like with all the abilities Kirby copies, he still manages to make himself look adorable and menacing with their new look and ability.
