Kingpin’s Love Life Is Even More Tragic Than Daredevil’s

[ad_1]

Wedding bells may be on the horizon for the Kingpin once again but here’s a look at Wilson Fisk’s turbulent love life over the years.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Daredevil #35, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Amidst all the chaos in the Marvel Universe, a small cadre of Bullseye clones embarks on a killing spree across Manhattan, culminating in an attempt on New York City Mayor Wilson Fisk’s life. While the once and future Kingpin survived the assassination attempt, the incident nearly cost the life of Fisk’s personal bodyguard and rekindled love interest, Typhoid Mary. After facing the real possibility of losing her, Fisk proposes to Mary on the spot, and she immediately accepts. However, judging by Fisk’s romantic history, Mary may have just made a grave error in judgment, regardless of how genuine her feelings for the Kingpin might be.

Fisk’s proposal to Mary in Daredevil #35 — by Chip Zdarsky, Stefano Landini, Francesco Mobili, Marcio Menyz, and VC’s Clayton Cowles — is hardly his first experience with marriage. Fisk’s most prominent love interest is his ex-wife Vanessa Mariana, with whom they shared a son named Richard. Fisk’s family initially strongly disapproved of his criminal activities, with Fisk eventually attempting to keep his business interests legitimate to respect his wife.

However, after Vanessa was targeted by Fisk’s long line of rivals and enemies, he quickly resumed his wicked ways with perhaps even more brutal fury than before as his fight for control became deeply personal. Later, Vanessa would prove herself to be every inch as ruthless as Fisk when she launched her own criminal ambitions, even going as far as having Richard murdered when he became a liability to the family. Vanessa would die of a terminal condition, though her death would constantly haunt Fisk in his quiet moments.

Outside of his marriage to Vanessa, Kingpin’s dark past has taken a toll on his other amorous pursuits, including a Spanish woman named Marta. After being driven out of New York following Norman Osborn’s rise to power, Fisk attempts to live a quiet life in a Spanish coastal fishing village. During this time he strikes up a romance with Marta while looking after her two young children. However, the Hand tracks Fisk down and has Lady Bullseye and her ninja accomplices brutally murder Marta and her children as part of their vendetta as the Kingpin. This draws Fisk back to New York and his supervillain destiny in order to achieve his revenge.

Even Fisk’s romantic history with Typhoid Mary is a particularly complicated one, with Mary hired by Fisk to track down and kill Daredevil. Given Mary’s severe dissociative identity disorder, her more innocent personality romanced Matt Murdock while her violent, erratic personality embraced a love affair with Fisk. Mary’s instability became too much for Fisk and she left him for a time; she would still take the occasional enforcer job for the Kingpin before rejoining him after he was elected Mayor, eventually rekindling their old romance.

Daredevil Typhoid Mary Kingpin Marriage

Fisk and Mary’s engagement comes as the upcoming crossover event Devil’s Reign looms on the horizon, as Kingpin prepares to use his powers at New York City’s Mayor to officially outlaw all superhero activity in the city. And with the next issue of Daredevil featuring the wedding between Fisk and Mary, the nuptials could either solidify the biggest power couple on the villainous side of the Marvel Universe or lead to something far darker.

Given Fisk’s own personal history with his love interests being targeted or breaking bad, Mary may do well to keep her guard up as she walks down the aisle.
