Kingdom Hearts pays tribute to Final Fantasy VII’s 25th anniversary with a rendered illustration of Sora emulating the broody aura of Cloud Strife.
Kingdom Hearts celebrated the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII with a rendered illustration paying homage to Square Enix’s landmark 1997 RPG.
The artwork captures Sora alone, keyblade in hand as he stands with his back turned to the dimly lit clock tower of Scala ad Caelum. Much of the composition seemingly takes inspiration from official artwork for Final Fantasy VII Remake, with Sora even mimicking Cloud Strife’s pose, and a mako-green skyline more reminiscent of Midgar than Scala ad Caelum’s constantly sunny skies.
The cross-franchise congratulations isn’t out of character, since Kingdom Hearts is well known for inviting faces from the Final Fantasy games into its stories. Cloud, in particular, has been a part of Sora’s journey since the beginning, having made an appearance in the first entry of the series as a boss and then again in its sequel Kingdom Hearts 2 as a friendly NPC. Similarly, Cloud’s long-time nemesis Sephiroth appeared in both games as a secret boss notorious for his difficulty.
Square Enix previously released two logos to commemorate Final Fantasy VII‘s 25th anniversary. The images featured the SOLDIER trio of Cloud, Zack Fair and Sephiroth, subtly referencing their roles throughout both the original game and subsequent spin-offs. Furthermore, the producer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Yoshinori Kitase announced information for Final Fantasy VII Remake‘s highly anticipated Part 2 might soon make its way to players if all goes accordingly. This was on top of the planned 2022 release for Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, a free-to-play mobile game compiling the events of the original Final Fantasy VII and its subsequent spinoffs.
Kingdom Hearts is also hitting a milestone of its own this year. Square Enix announced it was commemorating Kingdom Hearts‘ 20th anniversary with a special event to be held in Tokyo’s Shibuya Hikarie. The celebration will showcase an exclusive Kingdom Hearts exhibition and a mini-concert recalling the soundtrack of the franchise. Additionally, there will be a special Q&A panel with several members of the series’ Japanese voice actors and developers.
Kingdom Hearts‘ 20th-anniversary event will be held on April 10. Fans unable to personally attend the venue may watch a video of the proceedings at an unspecified later date.
