With cloud versions of ten Kingdom Hearts games due out on the Nintendo Switch, producer Ichiro Hazama addresses the possibility of native versions.
The Kingdom Hearts series is coming to Nintendo Switch via its streamable Cloud service, but fans holding out for native versions of the ten games on the hybrid console will have an even longer wait ahead of them.
Ichiro Hazama, the producer on the most recent entry in the popular RPG series, addressed the possibility of non-Cloud versions of the ported Kingdom Hearts games on the Switch. “At this moment in time, the production of a native version is undecided,” Hazama told Nintendo Life. “We believe that the Cloud version is currently the best way to deliver the Kingdom Hearts series to Nintendo Switch players, but we are always excited to hear to feedback from our fans and want to thank them for all their support.”
The announcement of the Kingdom Hearts Cloud Versions was met with a mixed response. Although many fans were excited to be able to experience Sora’s journey on the Nintendo Switch, many were also disappointed by the fact that the ports being Cloud Versions meant their consoles would require a permanently online connection. When asked why developer Square Enix opted for Cloud Versions over native ports, Hazama explained that porting the games to the Switch proved “quite difficult for various reasons,” though cited the console’s “storage capacity” as one reason in particular.
These Kingdom Hearts ports are not the only games to receive Cloud Versions on the Nintendo Switch, as a number of AAA titles have been ported to the console using the service. Some notable examples include Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Hitman 3, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. While players are able to test Cloud Versions for a limited time using free launcher applications before purchasing an access pass, no Cloud Version of a game can be played offline.
During the reveal of Sora as the final DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate made earlier this month, it was also confirmed that ten Kingdom Hearts games would be arriving on the Nintendo Switch at a currently unspecified date. Four separate bundles will be available for purchase, including the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 HD ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. These collections can be bought separately or as the Integrum Masterpiece which bundles all three.
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 HD ReMix includes the original Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep alongside cinematics from 358/2 Days and Re:coded. A separate collection includes Dream Drop Distance, Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage and cinematics from Kingdom Hearts χ bundled within the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind brings the latest Kingdom Hearts title to the Switch complete with its DLC.
