King of the Hill Revival Quietly Enters Development

[ad_1]

A revival of Fox’s King of the Hill is in early development from original creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels of Bandera Entertainment.

Tell you what, those dang ol’ King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are in the early stages of developing a revival of the fan-favorite Fox cartoon through their new animation company, Bandera Entertainment.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Judge and Daniels have numerous projects in development under their newly-formed Bandera label. Netflix has already ordered 10 episodes of Bad Crimes, making it the second Bandera production to get picked up following Freeform’s Praise Petey. While the company would “rather keep the specifics under wraps for now,” it does have “other shows in various stages of development.”

According to THR, such shows include cartoons from the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen, Zach Woods, Jimmy O. Yang and tattoo/graffiti artist Mr. Cartoon, not to mention what appears to be an adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s Dykes to Watch Out For with Carrie Brownstein. Additionally, while they’re “not ready to share official details” at the moment, Judge and Daniels are gearing up for “the return of former Fox favorite King of the Hill.”

Judge’s second major animated success following MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head (which is itself headed for its second revival in the form of a feature film), King of the Hill premiered on Fox 25 years ago on Jan. 12, 1997. The show originally ran on the network for 255 episodes across 13 seasons, concluding on Sept. 13, 2009. However, following the Fox finale, four additional Season 13 episodes aired in syndication from May 3, 2010 to May 6, 2010, bringing King of the Hill‘s total episode count up to 259. The show centered on the Hill family — Hank (Judge), Peggy (Kathy Najimy) and Bobby (Pamela Adlon) — chronicling the various antics they would get up to while living in the small town of Arlen, Texas.

Since 2017 or so, there have been murmurs of Judge and Daniels potentially reviving King of the Hill for new episodes at Fox. Then, in March of 2021, King of the Hill producer Brent Forrester revealed that negotiations for a revival were indeed underway. “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES,” Forrester wrote as part of a Reddit AMA. “They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill.”

However, as THR notes, there are currently no official details on the King of the Hill revival beyond the fact that the project is, in fact, in the works. That said, the show’s original seasons did recently return to syndication on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block.
