Clerks III star Jason Mewes says the latest film in Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse franchise is currently targeting a July 2022 release.
Clerks III star Jason Mewes has revealed when fans can likely expect to see the latest film set within writer-director Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse.
While Smith himself previously confirmed that Clerks III is expected to arrive sometime in mid-to-late 2022, Mewes got a bit more specific during a recent appearance on Steve-O’s Wild Ride!. According to Mewes, while nothing is set in stone as of yet, the film is currently targeting a July 2022 release. “So, we did Clerks III,” Mewes said. “Hopefully, guys, it’ll be out in– around July… They’re saying maybe July of next year.”
Clerks III is the eighth live-action feature film in Smith’s View Askewniverse franchise (the ninth overall, counting the animated Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!), as well as the third film in the director’s Clerks series. The threequel sees Smith and Mewes reprise their roles as Jay and Silent Bob, respectively.
Jay and Silent Bob have appeared in all seven live-action View Askewniverse movies thus far: 1994’s Clerks, 1995’s Mallrats, 1997’s Chasing Amy, 1999’s Dogma, 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, 2006’s Clerks II and 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Smith and Mewes also cameoed as Jay and Silent Bob in the 2000 Wes Craven film Scream 3.
Of course, Clerks III also marks the return of series mainstays Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson as Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, respectively. Additionally, Clerks II alums Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman are slated to reprise their roles as Becky Scott and Elias Grover, respectively. Meanwhile, Marilyn Ghigliotti is expected to reprise her role as Veronica Loughran, a character who has not been seen since the original Clerks (though Ghigliotti did recently cameo as herself in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot).
Clerks III marks a significant status quo shift for the series, with Randal — not Dante — serving as the main protagonist this time around. The film takes cues from the real-life heart attack Smith suffered in 2018, with Randal being forced to confront his own mortality after surviving a heart attack of his own. As a way of leaving a legacy behind, Randal embarks to make a movie based on his life at the Quick Stop convenience store with Dante.
Clerks III is slated for release in 2022. The film will be distributed by Lionsgate.
