Excitement for Spider-Man: No Way Home, continues to build ahead of this weekend’s release, with the official No Way Home trailers revealing more and more versions of classic Spider-Man villains confirmed to return to battle the wall-crawler, including Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans).
Those that remained for the Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene saw that Tom Hardy is now set to make his first appearance in the MCU. While this set up a future meeting between the two, there has been no word on whether this meeting will arrive in No Way Home, or is being saved for a future project. Whether this scenario comes to pass or not, Venom’s MCU confirmation opens many new narrative doors for the franchise to explore into phase 4 and beyond.
What we know for sure is that the crossover is happening, even if it remains to be seen exactly how and when that happens. In a recent interview with Collider, Kevin Feige addressed the crossover and the inspiration that went into making it happen. As Feige explains, he was impressed with the positive response from fans for the first Venom, and given the character’s comic book history with Spider-Man, he knew that now was the time to make these characters meet.
“You look at the obvious comic connotations between Venom and Spider-Man and it is inherent. So the minute Sony made their Venom movie and it worked as well as it did, and Tom Hardy became as iconic as he has become as Venom, then the obvious question is then, ‘How do we start to merge them?’”
As for an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, one factor that seems to indicate Venom won’t participate is that the movie only seems to be bringing in the supervillains who’ve died fighting Spider-Man. And since Tom Hardy’s Venom has never met Peter Parker or Spider-Man, if he’s involved, it may not be for a confrontation with Spidey. With that said, his inclusion in the movie is obviously possible. More rumors claim that various other superheroes are also rumored to appear, most notably Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, along with other favorites like Daredevil star Charlie Cox.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the truth of all these rumors will finally be revealed when the movie is released this weekend. Will it be just a greatest-hits mashup of Spider-Man’s cinematic legacy, or an epic, thrilling rollercoaster of adventure and emotions that wraps up the trilogy? Let us know in the comments after you’ve seen it.
