Kang the Conqueror Just Turned the Scarlet Centurian Into His Most Tragic Variant

The latest version of Nathaniel Richards has just taken on yet another one of his classic personas, leading to a tragic end for the variant.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Kang the Conqueror #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Nathaniel Richards has had many names over the course of his long history in the Marvel Universe, but none are more famous than Kang the Conqueror. While he grew from a wide-eyed adventurer intoto a time-traveling despot, the latest version of Nathaniel Richards is hoping to avoid that path entirely. While he has already stepped out from under the shadow of Kang, doing so only landed him in the sights of another variant” Rama-Tut. This Marvel Pharaoh is the worst version of himself yet, but he has just made the Scarlet Centurion into the most tragic variant yet in Kang the Conqueror #2, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern and VC’s Joe Caramagna.

When he was first given the chance to train under his future self, Nathaniel Richards was quick to take the opportunity. While his time in the prehistoric era certainly instilled within him many of the skills and strengths necessary to eventually become the conqueror he was destined to be, the unrelenting cruelty of Kang soured Nathaniel to that idea. After watching the woman he had fallen in love with slaughtered alongside the rest of her tribe, Nathaniel took it upon himself to steal Kang’s armor and leave the villain for dead. Stepping into the timestream, Nathaniel was violently thrust forward in time to ancient Egypt. Specifically, to the reign of the Pharaoh Rama-Tut, a variant who used future technology to rise to power in Ancient Egypt.

To battle Rama-Tut’s army, Nathaniel forged Kang’s armor into that of his Iron Lad persona, though it would all be for naught. As valiantly as he fought alongside the ancient Moon Knight against the forces of Rama-Tut, Nathaniel and his ally would both fall in battle and be brought before the Pharaoh. With his incredible technology, Rama-Tut twisted the would-be heroes to his own will, and in the process transformed his younger self into a tragic version of the Scarlet Centurion.

First introduced in 1968’s Avengers Annual #2 in the story “…And Time, the Rushing River…” by Roy Thomas, Don Heck and Werner Roth, the Scarlet Centurion has long been little more than a footnote in the history of Nathaniel Richards. Following the loss of his empire at the hands of the Fantastic Four, Rama-Tut attempted to retreat to his own era. Instead, he was left in the modern age where he came into contact with his possible ancestor Doctor Doom. This chance encounter would inspire Richards to give up the guise of Rama-Tut and become the Scarlet Centurion. In his first outing, the Scarlet Centurion plotted against the Avengers, manipulating them into a battle with their own alternate universe counterparts. Ultimately, the Scarlet Centurion persona was considered a failure after his defeat at the hands of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and though there was one successful variant of the Centurion, Rama-Tut would reemerge as Richards’ then-primary moniker. Now, the Scarlet Centurion has become an even more humiliating figure, forced to wage a war against ancient Egypt’s other superpowered tyrant — Apocalypse.

The Scarlet Centurion has never been a particularly memorable figure in the Marvel Universe, but his latest iteration might just be the one to leave a meaningful impact. The new origin of the Scarlet Centurion is far more shocking than the original, not to mention one that makes far more sense. Assuming he manages to survive the war against Apocalypse, this Scarlet Centurion might even become iconic in his own right.
