Justice League’s Joshua Williamson teases an upcoming project with art by Daniel Sampere and Alejandro Sánchez that homages Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The Justice League is at the center of art promoting an unnamed DC storyline that calls back to Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Justice League writer Joshua Williamson teased the mysterious project with art by Daniel Sampere and colorist Alejandro Sánchez, accompanied by a caption reading “It’s about legacy…” The art shows the League standing in triumphant poses, with inset panels that detail the origins of various supporting characters. Furthermore, the spread features floating heads of different heroes overlaying a series of multiple Earths. These visual motifs are callbacks to Crisis on Infinite Earths and its sequels, hinting that the unnamed book will involve DC’s Multiverse.
In 1985, DC tasked writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez with combining its multiple timelines into one streamlined continuity through the 12-part Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the storyline, the villainous Anti-Monitor attempted to destroy different planes of existence. To depict this otherworldly feat, Pérez used the visual motif of multiple planets floating alongside one another, capturing the core premise and the epic scale. Years later, DC released a collected edition of the book with a cover by painter Alex Ross, who added inset panels that depicted critical moments from the series. Sampere and Sánchez’s art homages these iconic visual choices, establishing its own importance.
In addition to Sampere and Sánchez’s Crisis imagery, this teaser art also emphasizes some of DC’s legacy heroes. Multiple generations of characters are shown, such as six different Green Lanterns, four Flashes, two iterations of the Teen Titans and various characters from Future State. The inclusion of these characters ties into Williamson’s caption while also connecting to Generations. That storyline repurposed elements of DC’s abandoned 5G event, which would have supposedly replaced classic characters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman with new successors.
Currently, Williamson continues to explore DC’s various worlds in Justice League Incarnate, a series centered on heroes from different realities who have banded together to protect the Multiverse from those who would destroy it. The book has featured a rotating cast of characters and rotating artists and will end in March with Issue #5, as the League makes a final stand against Darkseid.
Outside of the Multiverse, DC plans on killing its mainstream heroes in the aptly named “Death of the Justice League.” The storyline will unfold in Justice League #75 by Williamson and artist Rafa Sandoval, as the League confronts the cosmic threat of the Dark Army. Williamson says that like “Death of Superman” before it, “Death of the Justice League” will have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the DC Universe. “We want people to understand, this is serious and this is gonna have a major impact in the DCU moving forward.”
