Justice League Villain Daemon Rose Has Close Ties to Superman & Lois Lane

[ad_1]

Green Arrow & Black Canary just captured the Justice League’s newest foe, the Daemon Rose, a mysterious sniper with secret ties to Superman’s family.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League #65, on sale now from DC Comics.

The Justice League’s newest antagonist, the Daemon Rose, just revealed he is actually part of Superman’s family. In addition to this, he appears to have connections to many of DC’s most powerful and important intelligence agencies.

While he was spying on Black Canary and Green Arrow through the lens of his sniper rifle, the two heroes caught the Daemon Rose and apprehended him. He explained why he was tailing Green Arrow and gave them a shocking admission in his defense. As he explained in Justice League #65 by Brian Michael Bendis, Steve Pugh, Romulo Fajadro, Jr. and Josh Reed, the Daemon Rose is actually Loin Lane’s brother.

The organization known as Leviathan had recently dismantled or absorbed all of the world’s major intelligence agencies tasked with monitoring superheroes. In response to the new threat posed by Leviathan, a group of the world’s greatest detectives collaborated to reform Checkmate (a former government agency that had previously monitored superhuman affairs within the US and abroad). Green Arrow agreed to fund the group, while Lois Lane used her investigative skills to help them look into whatever Leviathan might be up to.

The Daemon Rose was previously seen scoping out Lois through his sniper rifle. While this initially seemed to be menacing, now it is quite clear that he was merely checking in on his sister. He also spied on Black Canary and Green Arrow while they were on a date, once again using his rifle to do so. The date ended with the two heroes ambushing and apprehending him, which led to him divulging more about his identity, saying he was only interested in Green Arrow’s connection to Checkmate. He also claimed to be a former agent of A.R.G.U.S. (a division of U.S. Homeland Security. Apparently, “the Daemon Rose” was the secret code name that A.R.G.U.S. gave him. Finally, he revealed that he was the son of General Sam Lane (and therefore Lois’s brother).

If Lois knows about her brother’s existence, then she has hidden the fact from almost everyone (presumably including her husband, Superman). However, it seems far more likely that her father, the recently-deceased Sam Lane, might have concealed the existence of his son, especially if the boy was born from an extramarital affair or was somehow tied to his own secret activities. General Lane was notorious for his involvement in nefarious government and military operations, many of which were illegal. It is definitely conceivable that General Lane might have one of his own children mixed up in some scheme.

Daemon Rose Checkmate #1

General Lane was killed by Leviathan, leaving Lois traumatized at the loss of her father. Since both Lois and Green Arrow helped reform Checkmate to combat Leviathan, it makes sense that the Daemon Rose would be interested in spying on them. However, his appearance is sure to upset the status quo. For one, it means that Lois has to confront the ramifications of a new family member coming out of the woodwork. Furthermore, the Daemon Rose has chosen to stay in hiding all this time, suggesting he has many more secrets that he is concealing.

It also needs to be noted that he used a sniper rifle to spy on people. As a trained spy, there are many available tools he could use for reconnaissance, but his first choice was to use a deadly weapon. The comic ends with someone dressed as Deathstroke attacking the Daemon Rose (and Green Arrow and Black Canary by extension). It seems that Lois’s brother has made some enemies along the way, and this will just be one more thing he will need to explain whenever he and Lois finally come face-to-face.
