Jurassic World: Dominion Roared into Theaters Over the Weekend
Jurassic World: Dominion thundered into box offices this weekend, taking in an estimated $143.37 million. This is the best domestic debut for a non-superhero film during the pandemic and it’s down just 3% from the last film in the franchise, Fallen Kingdom. EntTelligence, a group that analyzes the box office numbers, says that 10.8 million moviegoers saw the film this weekend, making the fourth best pandemic opening after Spider-Man: No Way Home at 20.6 million, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at 14 million and Top Gun: Maverick at 11.6 million.
Speaking of Top Gun, that continued to soar high with another $50 million weekend largely driven by word-of-mouth. In it’s sixth week Doctor Strange conjured up another $4.9 million even with its upcoming release on Disney+ less than two weeks away. Two animated features round out the top five with Bob’s Burgers Movie cooking up $2.33 million and The Bad Guys making off with another $2.25 million.
The interesting thing will be to see what Jurassic World’s second week drop will be as the film is being panned by critics and will be going up against Pixar’s Lightyear next weekend. Will Disney’s decision to reinsert a lesbian scene in the children’s film to spite the governor of Florida pay off, or hurt the movie’s performance at the box office?
