Jungle Cruise shows that nothing is what it seems with Dwayne Johnson’s Skipper Frank. Here are his best scams in Disney’s new movie.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Jungle Cruise, now available in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
Jungle Cruise has been an immediate success, with Disney already in talks with the movies’ stars about a potential sequel. The film is inspired by the Disney Parks attraction of the same name and is centered around the quest for the legendary Tears of the Moon, a flower from the Tree of Life that can heal any ailment or break any curse.
The two main characters are played by Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. Blunt’s Indiana-Jones-type Dr. Lily Houghton is looking for the Tears of the Moon, and Johnson’s Skipper Frank Wolff is her guide, who provides their transportation up the Amazon River. However, nothing is as it seems because Frank makes a habit of bending the truth and tricking people into doing what he wants. In fact, Lily describes Frank as an “onion of deceit,” referencing his layers upon layers of lies. Here are his most notable scams.
Frank’s Cruises Are Fake
Even before Lily came into Frank’s life, he was well versed in scamming people. For a living, Frank offers jungle cruises to tourists, and let’s just say that they are far from impressive. His signature attraction is the “backside of water,” which he shows by means of an aqueduct-type of contraption. On top of that, almost everything else is also contrived and fake. He raves about the deadly hippos that they might encounter, which one little girl points out are not native to the Amazon. As she says so, Frank triggers an animatronic hippo and scares his audience. Frank also fakes his engine not working and even hires a local tribe of “cannibals” to come and “terrorize” his paying customers. It might be an entertaining attraction for city-living tourists, but nothing is real.
Frank’s Fight With Proxima Was Staged
When Frank’s boat engine was repossessed, he snuck into Mr. Nilo’s office to try and steal it back. That’s why Lily arrives and mistakes Frank for Mr. Nilo. Naturally, Frank plays along and strikes a deal to take Lily and her brother upriver, and that is scam enough. However, it gets worse. When McGregor walks in with the real Mr. Nilo, Frank already has a contingency plan set up. To ensure he gets the deal with Lily, he has to prove his worth. So, he has Proxima, his pet jaguar, walk into the restaurant and attack him. In a feat of strength, Frank wrestles his pet and “saves” everyone’s lives. As a result, Lily is impressed with him and gives him the job over Mr. Nilo.
Frank Organized Their Capture By the Local Tribe
Along the way, Lily finds out that something is up with Frank. She sneaks into his quarters and finds all kinds of stuff related to the arrowhead and the search for the Tears of the Moon. He tries to deny that he still wants it, but his actions prove otherwise. Immediately following their conversation, they are captured by “headhunters.” When they are brought before the tribe’s chief, Trader Sam, Frank acts as an interpreter and tries to convince Lily that she can go free if she leaves the arrowhead behind, saying that the tribe wants the relic returned. However, when Lily makes a move and steals one of the guard’s spears, everything falls apart. Trader Sam reveals that Frank hired her tribe to capture them and to get Lily to turnover the arrowhead.
Frank’s Identity Is a Fraud
While they are still in Trader Sam’s camp, Frank and Lily are attacked by Don Aguirre and his group of cursed conquistadors, who steal the arrowhead. Frank is able to save Lily and retrieve the arrowhead, but in the process, he takes a sword to the chest and falls down into the river. The next morning, Lily finds Frank and realizes that he survived. Immediately, she can tell that he is not fully human. In fact, Frank’s whole identity is fake. He reveals that his real name is Francisco and he was actually one of Aguirre’s men. He disagreed with what Aguirre did to get them cursed and they have fought for centuries, but Frank is cursed all the same.
