Not every good anime needs an anthropomorphic panda to support its protagonist, but it certainly never hurts.
The self-sustaining cursed corpse that spends most of his screen time as an intelligent panda is well known by fans of Jujutsu Kaisen. Panda’s unique character design, combat sense, and kind heart have all led fans of Gege Akutami’s hit manga turned anime to suspend their disbelief and accept an anthropomorphic panda into their hearts.
Outside of his battle with Mechamaru, Panda spends most of his time in JJK as a tertiary character. The Kyoto Goodwill Exchange Event that sets the scene for this battle gives anime fans their first true introduction to Panda, but there is still so much to know about the abrupt-mutated cursed corpse created by Masamichi Yaga.
9 Panda Is An Abrupt-Mutated Cursed Corpse
Cursed Corpses are a regular occurrence in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. When a cursed spirit or jujutsu sorcerer wants to impact the world without putting their own life at risk, they can either let a shikigami loose on the world or imbue a puppet with their own cursed energy.
Both of these techniques require the caster to give up some of their own cursed energy, but an abrupt-mutated cursed corpse is different. The brilliance of Masamichi Yaga allowed him to create a cursed corpse that was able to both gain self-awareness and create its own supply of cursed energy. This abnormal cursed corpse was labeled an abrupt mutated cursed corpse by the Jujutsu higher-ups, but Yaga simply calls it Panda.
8 Panda Is Close Friends With Yuta Okkotsu
Although Pandas don’t behave in the same predictable ways that humans do, they still seem to value friendship. The abrupt mutated cursed corpse that studies at Tokyo Jujutsu High under Satoru Gojo values the friendships that he has made while learning to be a sorcerer.
One of those friends is Yuta Okkotsu, a second year student currently studying abroad in the anime timeline. Fans will get the chance to see Yuta and Panda bond as first year students in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen movie, Volume 0.
7 His Creation Led To Masamichi Yaga Being Promoted To Special Grade
By mastering the art of cursed corpses and imbuing his greatest creations with their own self-sustaining supply of cursed energy, Masamichi Yaga rewrote what it meant to be a cursed corpse. His genius led to the higher-ups that reign over the world of jujutsu to consider designating Tokyo Jujutsu High’s principal as a special grade sorcerer. This designation would put him in the realm of Satoru Gojo, Yuta Okkotsu, and Yuki Tsukomo, an exclusive group of extraordinary jujutsu sorcerers.
6 A Normal Cursed Corpse Holds One Spirit, But Panda’s 3 Cores Offer Self-Awareness & Independence
A cursed corpse is formed by imbuing an inanimate object with soul information and cursed energy. An ordinary cursed corpse is only capable of simple if/then commands due to the limitations of a soul being repurposed after death.
Yaga reinvented the term cursed corpse when he imbued Panda with the information of three compatible souls that maintain a constant watch over each other. This trifecta of souls offers the cursed corpse known as panda self-awareness and true independence from Yaga, which is something no other cursed corpse can claim.
5 Panda Is A Grade 2 Sorcerer, But Likely Deserves A Higher Grade
During the Kyoto Goodwill Exchange Event, Panda gives viewers a snapshot of each participants current grade. Panda ranks himself as a grade 2 sorcerer, which likely stands as his official jujutsu sorcerer grade assigned to him by the higher-ups.
Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen already know how unreliable and inconsistent the higher-ups can be. Realistically, Panda deserves at least a Grade 1 ranking when taking into consideration his three separate forms that offer him physical buffs that a normal sorcerer doesn’t have access to.
4 Not Even Manga Readers Know What His Third Form Looks Like
Panda still stands as an important secondary character in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, but not even manga readers know what Panda’s third form looks like. The sister that watches over his Panda and Gorilla cores is described as bashful and framed in a green light in the anime, but other than that, fans have been left in the dark regarding Panda’s third form.
Considering Gege Akutami’s fascination with Japanese folklore and the tusks included in the character design of his Gorilla form, some fans have theorized that the third form could be the mythical Baku or Orotoshi. Perhaps Gorilla serves as Panda’s physical half and his sister stands in as the bashful spiritual half.
3 Gorilla Mode Comes With A Cursed Technique
Panda describes his base form as the balanced version of his three halves. When he transforms into his older brother’s Gorilla form, he embraces the offensive buffs offered by his new physical form and a cursed technique known as Unblockable Drumming Beat.
Though it has not been confirmed that this is a separate cursed technique, it uses cursed energy to reinforce Panda’s attacks, essentially making them unstoppable. Even if the opponent blocks Panda’s attacks in Gorilla mode, they are still damaged by his cursed energy, making him an unstoppable force regardless of the strength of his opponent.
2 After The Shibuya Incident, Panda Joins Hakari’s Secret Jujutsu Fight Club
Some might not recognize the name Hakari, but the third year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High has just become one of the main players in the manga. To introduce readers to the dangerous third year sorcerer, Akutami brought Panda back as a combatant in Hakari’s secret jujutsu fight club.
When Yuji and Megumi enter Hakari’s fight ring to recruit the serrated sorcerer, they are forced into the ring with an anthropomorphic Panda that fans already know and love. The abrupt mutated cursed corpse is powerful, but he proves to be no match for Yuji in the ring.
1 He Wants Us To Know That “Even Pandas Cry”
Panda often has to explain to his peers that he should not be expected to behave in a predictable manner. As an abrupt-mutated cursed corpse, Panda is unique and independent from those that surround him at Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Still, despite his independence and animalistic physique Panda still speaks and feels emotions like a human. This doesn’t mean that one can expect Panda to respond to his emotions in the same way a human would, but he still feels them all the same. When Yaga is hunted down in chapter 147 of the manga, Panda sheds a few tears in one of the most heart wrenching sequences to date.
