JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All The Stand Types, Explained

[ad_1]

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure introduces Stands in the third part of the series, Stardust Crusaders. Stands are a manifestation of one’s spiritual energy, appearing beside the user, ready to act. Just like the users themselves, Stands come in all shapes, sizes, and forms.

Stands also possess different abilities, such as healing, stopping time, and seeing the future. Stands are typically used in battle, and their effectiveness varies greatly, depending on the user’s personality or nature. During a fight, it’s important to know what type of Stand one is facing in order to beat it. Throughout the series, fans are introduced to the different types of Stands and the heroes and villains who wield them.

12 Close-Range Power-Type Stands Are Better At Hand-T0-Hand Combat

Close-Range Stands are also know as Power-Type Stands because they are often fast and have powerful physical attacks. Typically a Power-Type Stand user confronts enemies directly, as their Stand is more effective up close. Power-Type Stands typically obey their users and don’t act on their own accord. Although Power-Type Stands are quite useful, they are limited by their short range and are ineffective against Stands that are out of sight or hidden.

11 Long-Distance Operation-Type Stands Can Be Controlled From A Distance

Long-Distance Operation-Type Stands are also known as Remote Control Stands. These Stands are able to move greater distances while their user is still able to control them with precision. Remote Control Stands are better served for ambush-type situations rather than up-close battles. Further, if the Stand travels too far away from its user, the user becomes vulnerable to attacks and left without protection.

10 Automatic-Type Stands Operate On Programmed Commands And Functions

Automatic-Type Stands act on programmed instructions rather than following the commands of their users. There is no link between the Stand and the user, and oftentimes, the user may not know the status of their own Stand. Automatic-Type Stands can also either be Autopilot, traveling far distances from their user without losing power, or Posthumus, existing long after their user has died.

9 Range-Irrelevant Stands Are Some Of The Strongest

As the name implies, Range-Irrelevant Stands are not limited by their distance from their user. Instead, Range-Irrelevant Stands maintain their function and effectiveness regardless of their proximity to the Stand user.

Range-Irrelevant Stands are some of the strongest and most powerful Stands in the series. Dio’s The World is a Range-Irrelevant Stand, as its time-bending capabilities are not affected by distance and range.

8 Humanoid Stands Are Either Natural Or Artificial

Humanoid Stands are those that have human-like physicality and features. This natural type closely resembles human beings capable of expressing emotions. These types of Stands appear more frequently at the beginning of the series.

Another type of Humanoid Stand is an Artificial Humanoid Stand, which has features that separate them from Natural Humanoid Stands, such as mechanical parts. These Stands may appear as dolls or robots, but lack a mouth for expression, and have become more common throughout the series.

7 Non-Humanoid Stands Resemble Other Lifeforms Or Objects

Natural Non-Humanoid Stands are those that look like other lifeforms or organisms, rather than humans. These Stands can resemble animals, like Squalo’s Crush which resembles a shark, or the Feral Cat Stand from Diamond Is Unbreakable which looks like a plant.

Artificial Non-Humanoid Stands are another subset of Non-Humanoid Stands that look like objects. These Stands can resemble tools, vehicles, and even clothing, and are oftentimes even visible to non-Stand users. Because of their type, users have to personally wield these Stands, otherwise, they are ineffective.

6 Phenomenon-Type Stands Don’t Really Fall Into Any Particular Category

If a Stand doesn’t fall within the other categories, it is classified as a Phenomenon-Type Stand. Phenomenon-Type Stands can be formless, like Shizuka Joestar’s Stand Invisible Baby, which grants her the ability to become invisible as a form of protection. Phenomenon-Type Stands can also grant the user superhuman abilities, like Mititaka Hazekura’s Stand Terra Ventus, which allows him to transform into any object.

5 Bound Stands Are Often Mistaken For Ordinary Objects

Bound Stands are those that are linked to ordinary objects and are therefore visible to non-Stand users. Generally, the larger the object the Stand is bound to, the more powerful the Stand is. Stand users with Bound Stands can often change what item their Stand is bound to.

Because they are bound to ordinary objects, it is easy for a Bound Stand user to catch an enemy completely off guard with a surprise attack. However, if the object it is bound to is destroyed, the Stand will be disabled, leaving its user vulnerable to attacks.

4 Colony Stand Users Are Protected From Dying

Colony Stands are Stands that are comprised of many units. Although the units constitute one Stand, the power is divided between them and each unit can act on its own. Six Bullets is an example of a Colony Stand.

Colony Stands are great in ambush-type situations, but they are also helpful to their user. Because the power is divided, the damage the user receives is also proportionate. As long as one unit of a Colony Stand survives, its user cannot be killed.

3 Evolved Stands Grow With Their User

Chariot Requiem is an evolved stand

Evolved Stands are usually attached to a user with a particularly weak fighting spirit, but one who is capable of growth. Koichi is an example of an Evolved Stand user. When the user experiences spiritual growth, its Stand also evolves gaining new power and abilities.

Another way a Stand can evolve, as shown in Golden Wind, is by being pierced with the Arrow. Being pierced by the Arrow allows Stands to unlock new abilities, or even transform into a Requiem form, which grants them abilities far beyond those of a normal Stand.

2 Sentient Stands Can Think For Themselves

Spice Girl is a sentient stand

Sentient Stands are those that possess the ability to think for themselves and learn. Sentient Stands have a consciousness separate from their user and act on their own, rather than following commands.

Although Sentient Stands are capable of thinking and acting on their own, they typically still follow the commands of their user and act to protect them. If a Sentient Stand does not have a user, then they are also categorized as Automatic Stands.

1 Shared Stands Are Those Who Do Not Have A Single User

Shared Stands are unique in that they do not have a single user. In Diamond Is Unbreakable, Bug-Eaten is a Stand that is shared by two rats simultaneously, whereas Cheap Trap moves on to a new user after the former dies.

Although not shown in the anime thus far, some Shared Stands can have differing appearances depending on the user. In the manga Steel Ball Run, the Boom Boom Family shares the Stand, Tomb of the Noise. This Stand has three different appearances for each of its three users.
