Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop star John Cho shares what Spike’s journey will be in the debut season of the live-action television series.
For so many fans who grew up Toonami or Adult Swim, Cowboy Bebop was a game-changer. While it had a short run, compared to other anime broadcasted on Toonami like Dragon Ball Z or Sailor Moon, its impact endures, with the series still airing on the network to this day. The animated series follows the likes of the Bebop crew across space as they attempt to collect bounties on criminals for a living. Now, Cowboy Bebop is turning once more to the small screen, this time in a live-action format.
The new Netflix series follows a similar setup to the original anime, with many beloved Cowboy Bebop characters receiving new life from their respective actors. Leading the charge is John Cho, who portrays Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter with a dark past connected to The Syndicate — a deadly criminal organization. During the red carpet premiere of the series, Cho spoke with journalists about what it was like to bring Spike to life and put on that costume for the first time.
“I’ve had costumes where somebody has to help you put things on, and this is just the suit in the room,” Cho said. “As we get dressed in the morning, pop the collar, button-up, walk out the trailer. It felt really good to be able to do that, and the costume really made me feel like Spike.”
For many fans, Spike is their favorite Cowboy Bebop character — due to how he blends comedy and tragedy. Despite his lazy demeanor, he is one of the most impressive bounty hunters out there, thanks to his fighting technique, flight skills, and marksmanship. Spike is also not a heartless bounty hunter, often showing kindness toward others when the moment strikes. On top of this, he has inner demons to face, which Cho touched on during the premiere.
“I would say the thing that’s really compelling about [Spike] is something that I relate to, which is I’m operating from a place of loss,” Cho said. “I don’t want to dramatize that too much in my life, but I really understand that. I can see why someone would be motivated by that loss. It is the Season 1 journey of Spike — running, running, running, and then having to be confronted with it.”
Cowboy Bebop is streaming now on Netflix.
