The stars of the new Suicide Squad film are coming out in support of the release of the ‘Ayer Cut’ of the first Suicide Squad film.
The stars of James Gunn’s new film, The Suicide Squad, are throwing their support behind the efforts to release the “Ayer Cut” of the 2016 version of Suicide Squad, as the original director, David Ayer, has said that the version of the film that was released was “not my movie” and so the fans driving #ReleaseTheAyerCut on social media want Ayer’s version put out there for the world to see.
As the start of the new film made the red carpet walk for the premiere of their movie, they were often asked about the Ayer Cut and the response was uniformly supportive of seeing Ayer’s vision finally released.
John Cena, who stars as Peacemaker in both the film and an upcoming HBO Max television series, noted about the Ayer Cut, “It’s in a company’s best interest to listen to their audience. If it’s in demand and they’ve got it, why not?”
Joel Kinnaman was one of a handful of actors to appear in both films and he agreed with Cena, responding to a question of whether Warner Bros. should release the Ayer Cut, “Why not? You always want to see the director’s vision.”
Finally, Mayling Ng gave her thoughts on the situation, as well, “It’s a win-win for everyone. It’s a win-win for him to get his vision out and also Warner Bros. makes double the money on the same film.”
The Ayer Cut has been in the news a lot more recently, with the impending release of Gunn’s take on the film. Ayer recently responded to a reviewer who compared the two films by stating, “I put my life into Suicide Squad. I made something amazing – My cut is [an] intricate and emotional journey with some ‘bad people’ who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. [My] cut is not the 10 week director’s cut. It’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the [incredible] work by John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd act resolution. A handful of people have seen it. If someone says they have seen it, they haven’t.”
Apparently the stars of the new film want to see it, as well.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad hits both theaters and HBO Max on Aug. 6.
