Jim Lee’s Batman Who Laughs Proves He’s Even More Evil Than You Imagined

Fan-favorite artist and DC Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee crafts his own rendition of the Dark Knight for Halloween – The Batman Who Eats Candy Corn.

DC Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee has offered up his own chilling rendition of The Batman Who Laughs.

The sketch, posted on Lee’s social media feeds, shows that even evil villains like to participate in certain holiday traditions. Lee regularly celebrates special occasions with DC character sketches, flexing his top-notch artistic chops for fans to enjoy. The artist drew his latest piece while streaming on Twitch and gave it away to one of the viewers. Lee even twisted The Batman Who Laughs’ maniacal laughter into the words “HA HA HA HA PPY HA LLOWEEN.”

In the art, The Batman Who Laughs stands bowled over with laughter, with rain downpouring around him and candy spilling out of his hands. Lee’s sketch takes Greg Capullo’s horrifying design for The Batman Who Laughs and makes him even scarier, swapping out some of the villain’s teeth for candy corn. The artist, who cheekily labeled the sketch “The Batman Who Eats Candy Corn” when posting it, was sure to utilize some appropriately ridiculous hashtags, including #oralhygenistnightmare and #thehorrorthehorror.

The Batman Who Laughs is an alternate reality version of Bruce Wayne who comes from DC’s Dark Multiverse. In his world, Batman was injected with Joker venom when he defeated the Clown Prince of Crime. The venom slowly destroyed his sense of self and turned the Dark Knight into The Batman Who Laughs. The character was heavily featured throughout Scott Snyder and Capullo’s Dark Nights: Metal sagas as well as Justice League and his own self-titled series with artist Jock.

This isn’t the first time that Lee has taken time out of his big schedule to play around with The Batman Who Laughs. In 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lee began drawing a series of sketches that fans could purchase from him via eBay, with the proceeds benefiting comic book stores that had been impacted by shutdowns and changes in their customer’s habits. The 60 sketches that Lee drew over the course of a year raised over $800,000, which was donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation.

Though he was defeated in the pages of Dark Nights: Death Metal, The Batman Who Laughs continues to have a powerful presence across DC’s multiverse of media. The character recently made his Fortnite debut as a playable outfit in the game. He is also featured in Batman/Fortnite: Foundation #1 by Snyder, Christos Gage, Donald Mustard, Joshua Hixon, Roman Stevens and AndWorld Design. In it, The Batman Who Laughs arrives in the world of Fortnite by obliterating everything in his path. Maybe he’s still on a sugar rush from all that candy corn.
