After decades apart, Ellen and Jesse work to mend their relationship as How I Met Your Father starts establishing its characters
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for How I Met Your Father, Season 1, Episode 4, “Dirrty Thirty,” now streaming on Hulu.
Ellen is one of the newest New Yorkers within How I Met Your Father following her divorce from her ex wife and subsequent departure from the produce farm they owned. She moved to the Big Apple in hopes of growing closer to her older adoptive brother, Jesse. However, moving to the city seems to be more difficult than she expected, and rebuilding her relationship with Jesse is even harder, as How I Met Your Father starts to establish its characters.
Following a hectic couple of days trying to find an apartment, Ellen was ready to try out her other goal — flirting with someone new. With Sophie’s party coming up, Ellen saw the opportunity for her and Jesse to party together for the first time since Ellen’s fifth birthday.
They jokingly reveal that during that party they found out their mother was cheating on their father. This resulted in their parents getting divorced, with their mother marrying another man and moving Ellen halfway across the country. Despite this, Ellen hoped they could make up for lost time, and Jesse saw this an amazing opportunity for both of them to hit on women together, referring to them as the Walker siblings. However, it seems as if Jesse forgot that Ellen took their mother’s maiden name after the divorce. This upset Ellen a bit, but she was still excited to party on.
As the party began, Jesse brought Ellen a glass of wine before finding out she is allergic to the sulphates. Before she could finish her sentence, she noticed a cute girl across the room. Jesse took the lead to introduce them by taking a page out of Barney Stinson’s book with a classic “Have you met Ellen?” He continued overhyping her by stating she was new to the city and came from a dairy farm and let them be. Later on, Jesse went to check up on his sister, but found out that the girl was already talking to someone else. Hoping to mend the situation, Jesse called Ellen an amazing girl and started to plot out their next move, but Ellen shut him down, stating she does not want to talk to him about it.
Outside while getting snacks for the party, Ellen confronted Jesse about his behavior throughout the night, calling him out on all the details he got wrong about her, such as her last name, her allergy to wine and the fact she owned a produce farm — not a dairy one. Ellen hoped that moving to the city would help them reconnect, but Jesse’s lack of knowledge on who she became since her birthday all those years ago made her think it was too late for them.
Jesse tried to mend things between them by telling Ellen how happy he was when their parents first brought her home from Vietnam. He also revealed he remembers the day they split up, as he was only nine-years-old and had to choose to move across the country or stay in the city with his father. Since that day, Jesse asked his father about Ellen daily until he saw his father’s hurt over the situation and decided to stop asking. Despite this, he saw the error that he made and wanted to make it up to her and be the big brother she always wanted, starting with teaching her how to jump over the subway railings.
While it was just a start, these two siblings are on a path to become better people and to avoid the risk of turning out like their parents, drifting apart emotionally until each other’s existence is just an afterthought. Jesse is embracing his role as a big brother as his cynical side is slowly fading away and the joys that life have to offer become clear once again.
There is still a long path ahead of them but Ellen and Jesse are quickly becoming close once again. Stream the first four episodes of How I Met Your Father only on Hulu with new episodes releasing every Tuesday.
